Argentina v Canada Best Bets
A huge amount of credit must go to Canada for getting this far, and by extension to their coach Jesse Marsch. However, they are in unchartered territory. This might be an advantage as they can play with no fear or pressure, but Argentina have a vastly experienced side who have navigated their way to the finals of their previous two tournaments. This experience of having been there and done that will be a huge asset.
Also, the fact that anything other than a victory against Canada would be a cause for national embarrassment and outrage, and the players will be extremely motivated to see this through and comfortably.
The French were unfortunate not to win against the Canadians in a pre-tournament friendly and although the Canadians held off for a period of time, they went down 4-0 to the Netherlands prior to that. The current odds on Argentina -1 Handicap at 2.10 with Paddy Power are too good to turn down.
If Argentina simply win the game by 1 goal, we lose half our stake, but we win our bet in full if they beat the Canadians by 2 or more goals. Considering the firepower at their disposal and everything mentioned above, we think this is the smartest way to play the game.
Our second selection for the game involves the little maestro, Lionel Messi. He hasn’t hit the heights we are used to in this tournament so far and needed resting for one of the group games. He’s yet to be on the scoresheet but that is only a matter of time. However, our play isn’t on him scoring but setting up his teammates. Messi has just one assist in the tournament so far, however, he has set up seven key chances for teammates which is the highest of anyone in the Copa America, bar James Rodriguez, and more than any player present at Euro 2024 as well.
With Canada likely to double up on him and try to restrict his space, we can see him effortlessly pinging through balls to the likes of Lautaro Martinez to finish off. Lionel Messi to have 1+ assists at 2.70 with Paddy Power would be our second play for the game.

📊 Argentina Form and Stats
Argentina have been solid if not spectacular so far in the tournament. They sailed through their group with 3 wins out of 3 and although they were given a scare and a competitive game against Ecuador in the quarter-finals, they were still able to navigate the game to a penalty shootout victory. Despite losing the xG battle to Ecuador 1.34 to 1.77, they comfortably won this at 2.29 to 0.29 against Peru, 2.87 to 0.14 against Chile and 3.38 to 1 against Canada the first time round.
Considering all of this, they should still be very comfortable favourites against this Canadian side and be expected to create plenty of chances throughout the game. Also, removing the penalty awarded to Ecuador (which made up a very high percentage of the xG score), they have consistently restricted their opponents to few quality chances.
📊 Canada Form and Stats
After the opening-day defeat to Argentina, many would have assumed that Canada were doomed and would struggle to land a point in the group, let alone finish in second place. Instead, they took a slice of fortune against a Peru side who were a man down and battled their way to a 0-0 draw against Chile to secure passage to the knockouts, after being recipients of yet another red card for their opponents.
The Canadians have played with a lot of energy and competitiveness in their games but have struggled in front of goal, while they created an xG of 1.97 against Venezuela in the quarter-final, their highest xG of the group stage was 1.36.
Purely in terms of matchups, Canadian fans will be concerned that they’ve struggled against all the elite sides they’ve come up against in recent times and the fact Argentina haven’t let any side take more than 3 shots on target against them so far.
⚔️ Argentina v Canada Head-to-Head
The two sides have played just twice in their history, with Argentina winning their 2010 friendly by a thumping 5-0 scoreline. Their second game was at this Copa America with the Argentines coming out 2-0 winners in the opening game of the tournament.
There is little to be learnt from the record against eachother, but we expect Argentina to be too strong for Canada on Wednesday.
