Everyone is looking at this game and expecting goals, yet it may prove to be a far tighter match than forecast.

For a start, PSG are ailing offensively. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are both slated for action but both are coming back from injuries and it is questionable just how fit they are. The other member of their superstar offensive trio, Neymar, has only two goals since the World Cup, one of which came against an amateur opponent in the Coupe de France.

Totally out of form, there is no guarantee of PSG firing here, with four losses in their 11 matches since the turn of the year.

Bayern may post a perfect record in the Champions league this season, but they have won three of these matches 2-0. Their highest scoring games were 5-0 and 4-2 wins over Viktoria Plzen, who are not a team close to PSG’s level.

On top of this, there is traditionally a tight flavour to first leg matches in European knockout ties. In the Champions League last season, for instance, only five of 14 matches produced over 2.5 goals. Bayern drew 1-1 in Salzburg and lost 1-0 in Valencia in their fixtures while PSG were 1-0 winners at home over Real Madrid before losing the second leg in dramatic circumstances.

These sides have met three times since 2020, with two of those games finishing 1-0, including their last meeting in April 2021.

All of this suggests that odds of 2.63 on under 2.5 goals in this game are generous and 1.6 on under 3.5 are both very generous.
