Man City v Aston Villa
Kick Off: Tuesday 22nd April at 20:00
A crunch tie in the battle for Champions League football sees Aston Villa travel to the Etihad to take on Manchester City. Unai Emery’s side sit just one point behind the Cityzens who have seen an upturn in form of late, winning four of their last five games across all competitions.
Aston Villa ran out 4-1 winners over Newcastle last time out in a statement win as they bid to reach the Champions League in back-to-back seasons. They’ll be hoping to replicate the scoreline from when these sides met earlier in the season, which saw Villa come away 2-1 winners.
⭐ Man City v Aston Villa Best Bet
Aston Villa forced Stefan Ortega into making four saves in their 2-1 win over Manchester City at Villa Park back in December. Unai Emery and his recruitment staff correctly identified that they needed to bolster their attacking line in January if they were to compete on all fronts, which has seen an improvement in their shots on target count.
Before the January transfer window, Aston Villa had one of the worst shots on target records in the Premier League - at one point, only the three promoted sides were finding the target with less frequency than Unai Emery’s men. This has shifted drastically since the attacking reinforcements have come in, which makes Villa a bigger threat, especially later in the game, where they can call on attacking players from the bench.
We can see Villa’s improvement in attacking areas quite clearly across their recent games against Newcastle and PSG. They had nine shots on target against Newcastle and hit the same total against the Ligue 1 Champions as they bowed out of the Champions League. The context surrounding this game is that both teams need the points for Champions League qualification, this should see Villa push on right until the final whistle against a City side that have regressed defensively this term.

🟤 Marco Asensio
Asensio has been an excellent addition to the Villa squad and his experience will be key in the run-in. He’s scored eight goals across his 15 appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa this season, which is already more than he managed in his entire time at PSG. He’s had 10 shots on target across his eight Premier League appearances this season (1.93 per 90), which is a promising record when combined with Villa’s impressive attacking performances of late.
🔵 Kevin De Bruyne
De Bruyne looks determined to bow out of his Manchester City career with a bang, he’s been excellent in the two games since he announced his departure at the end of the season with the Belgian picking up a goal and an assist against Crystal Palace in Manchester City’s most recent home game. He’s registered 10 goal contributions across his 15 starts in the Premier League, which is a superb record for a player that has struggled with injuries this season and found himself rotated in and out of the starting XI.
