The German Bundesliga season gets underway next weekend but as an early teaser and curtain raiser the defending league champions Bayern Munich will do battle v RB Leipzig who won the DFB Pokal last season.
This should be a mouthwatering German Super Cup clash between two teams who will be vying for silverware this season. Bayern have had a whole off-season under Thomas Tuchel whilst Leipzig have a completely new look after several ins and outs this summer.
This game will have the eyes of the world on it. Not just for the football, but for what could be the debut of Harry Kane as a Bayern Munich player. England’s all-time top goal scorer made the shock switch to Bavaria, as confirmed this morning, with many outlets reporting he could make his debut in front of a home crowd against Leipzig this afternoon.

Bayern machine expected to roll under Thomas Tuchel
Bayern Munich took a huge risk last season by sacking Julien Nagelsmann in March and replacing him with Thomas Tuchel. It nearly proved to be a disastrous decision and Bayern almost went trophyless. If Dortmund hadn’t fallen apart on the final day, then it would have gone down as a terrible campaign.
Despite the title win, Bayern immediately sacked CEO Oliver Kahn and Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidic and moved in a different direction this summer. The expectation is that after a full off-season under Tuchel, they will motor towards yet another Bundesliga title and compete for the Champions League.
As part of your Bayern Munich bet builder, we will assess the state of the squad heading into this German Super Cup clash. The Bavarian outfit has lost the likes of Lucas Hernandez and Sadio Mane but the defensive additions of Kim Min-Jae from Napoli for £50 million and Raphael Guerreiro on a free from Dortmund stand out as excellent business.
Harry Kane is of course the biggest name linked and would finally be a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who they looked lost without at times last year. Pre-season results should be taken with a pinch of salt, but Bayern smoked four goals past Liverpool and Monaco recently so are clearly firing in attack.
Bayern Munich team news
Bayern will be without first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer until after the September international break as he continues to recover from a broken leg suffered in a skiing accident last winter. Sven Ulreich will take the gloves until then, so they are certainly weakened in between the sticks.
With Raphael Guerreiro also doubtful with a calf injury, some possible defensive vulnerability must be considered when thinking about your Bayern Munich bet builder.
Thomas Muller, Eric Choupo Moting and Gabriel Marusic are all ruled out of the game. New midfield signing Konrad Laimer is set to make his debut against the team he’s just moved from, which makes for an interesting narrative.
Revolving door makes for a brand new look for RB Leipzig
Leipzig have pocketed nearly £250m in transfer fees this summer but the downside is that they’ve lost several key players. The most notable departures are Josko Gvardiol to Man City, Dominik Szoboszlai to Liverpool and Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea.
Leipzig have lost a ton of goals and assists by those departures and they also lost important midfielder Konrad Leimer on a free to their opponents here. When constructing RB Leipzig bet builders last season then the likes of Nkunku often featured heavily so we will need to adjust for the current climate.
Leipzig have raided sister club RB Salzburg for players and the acquisition of highly rated Benjamin Sesko looks ridiculously cheap for £24m. Lois Openda impressed for Lens last season in Ligue 1 and has cost Leipzig over £40m in fees. He should be the main beneficiary of their high-intensity system which creates a lot of chances.
There are some exciting looking young talents on loan as well with Fabio Carvalho and Xavi Simons both arriving. Leipzig have not played many high-profile friendlies this summer so we can’t take anything from their recent results. Lots of ins and outs can sometimes make it hard for any team to gel though.
RB Leipzig team news
Similar to Bayern, RB Leipzig will be without their first-choice goalkeeper with Peter Gulasci still recovering from ACL surgery. Janis Blaswich is a serviceable deputy and will continue with the gloves. It is unlikely that midfielders Amadou Haidara and Lukas Klostermann will be risked due to injury so the visitors will be weakened in this part of the field.
Both Danny Olmo and Timo Werner have been linked with transfer rumours away from the club, but they could both start here. Werner and Openda should make for an athletic strike duo who could cause Bayern some problems.

🏆 Bayern Munich to win
📈
Odds: 1.53
Bayern Munich are hosting this match at the Allianz Arena so already have a significant home advantage.
They have won six of the last seven German Super Cup finals and are the sort of club who want to win any trophy possible. After a disappointing previous campaign, they will want to put down an early marker here.

⚽ Both teams to score
📈
Odds: 1.50
It is almost a given that Bayern will hit the back of the net, so this part is really just backing Leipzig to score.
Despite losing Christopher Nkunku they possess plenty of firepower with Timo Werner and new signing Lois Openda. If Leipzig are to have any chance in this final, they are going to have to score multiple goals so they should at least hit the back of the net.
There are most certainly question marks over this Bayern back four in terms of conceding goals. The likes of Kim Min-Jae have joined the ranks, and while he was imperious in Italy, he is still untested in Germany. Benjamin Pavard is set to partner him in defence, and there are still questions to be answered about his future amid links to Manchester United. Mazraoui is still yet to find his feet after only racking up 1,000 domestic minutes last season.
Bayern will no doubt get the job done, but do not be surprised if this Leipzig side look to dampen the mood at the Allianz.

⚽ Over 3.5 goals
📈
Odds: 2.20
Five of the last six German Super Cup finals have ended with over 3.5 goals with the last three especially high scoring. There is a feeling that both teams will want to put on a show here and not care too much about defence.
When you have the first and third ranked top scorers in the Bundesliga last season, it’s a recipe for goals. Both sides are starting with their #2 keepers due to injury and neither look that secure defensively right now.

🏆 Bayern Munich -1 handicap
📈
Odds: 2.40
Bayern will be motivated to win well and make a statement. Four of their last six German Super Cup wins have been by at least a two-goal margin and they can rack up the score here.
This doesn’t feel like it could be a tight game so there’s every chance Bayern cover this -1 handicap.

🟨 Over 3.5 cards
📈
Odds: 1.83
Referee Bastian Dankert averages exactly four cards per game during his career, which has spanned 202 matches. He is not a high profile official so this is a big game for him, and he will want to show he can take charge.
There has been a big Europe-wide clampdown on time-wasting and other aspects of the game this summer. The Community Shield contained five cards last week, whilst the Portuguese Super Cup final racked up a massive 13 cards. Watch out for a fussy referee with rules enforced strongly.

⚽ Over 4.5 goals
📈
Odds: 4.00
This match has the potential to go absolutely wild with goals. The more relaxed nature of the fixture should lead to several chances at both ends. Both teams boast tremendous attacking talent, and Leipzig will be frothing at the mouth at the impending competitive debut of Lois Openda following his tremendous season at Lens last season.
This same clash last season resulted in a mad Bayern 5-3 win and recent H2H meetings have been high scoring. Compounded by the fact that both defences and goalkeepers aren’t at full strength, this has all the hallmarks of a high-scoring affair.
