Manchester United v Fulham Cheat Sheet
Man United v Fulham
The FA Cup quarterfinals conclude on Sunday afternoon as Fulham travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. Erik ten Hag has already won a trophy in his first season as United manager and given that there are only three other Premier League sides left in the competition (including Fulham), he will be seeking a domestic double. Surprisingly, this could be the Red Devils’ first FA Cup semi-final since 2017/18 and just their third since 2010/11. Last season, their run was prematurely ended in the fourth round as they lost on penalties to Middlesbrough. A win here would be just Fulham’s second semi-final since 1974/75, with their last deep FA Cup run culminating in a defeat against Chelsea at Villa Park where John Terry scored the only goal of the game for the Blues. This is also their first quarter-final since 2009/10 and last season they were comfortably dispatched 4-1 by Manchester City in the fourth round.
Manchester United have been flying under Erik ten Hag this season and see themselves sat in third in the league and through to the quarterfinals of the Europa League, having already won the League Cup this season. Their home record in particular has been superb, having not been beaten at Old Trafford since the start of September and only failing to win on three occasions since then (0-0 vs Southampton, 2-2 vs Leeds, 0-0 vs Newcastle). They have won six of their last eight in all competitions and last time out they won 1-0 at Real Betis thanks to a Marcus Rashford goal which helped seal the aggregate result of 5-1 over the Spanish side. Since the World Cup they have lost just two games – at Arsenal and Liverpool – and a big part of that is Marcus Rashford’s sensational form, scoring 19 and grabbing four assists in the 24 games he has appeared in since Qatar.
However, they will be without Casemiro who has begun a four-match ban after being sent off for the second time this season last week against Southampton whilst van de Beek and Eriksen are still out with their long term injuries. Garnacho will also miss out whilst Anthony Martial is being eased in. Antony is a doubt following an illness ruling him out of the 1-0 victory in Spain. Marcel Sabitzer could come in to replace Casemiro.
Fulham have been sensational on their return to the Premier League and they sit in ninth, still in with an outside shot of reaching the UEFA Conference League. They will be looking for a much improved performance here as they have lost their last two to Brentford and Arsenal and results have slowly started to dry up for Marco Silva’s men following a blistering start. In their last 11, they have won just four and two of those were in the FA Cup. To get here, they have beaten Hull, Sunderland (in a replay) and Leeds and now face a tough task to reach Wembley but are seeking revenge on the Red Devils as Garnacho scored a 93rd minute winner at Craven Cottage in the league. They will be delighted to welcome back Joao Palhinha who has served his two-game ban for too many yellow cards and he should come straight back in here ahead of Sasa Lukic. Shane Duffy, Neeskens Kebano and Layvin Kurzawa remain out but Cedric Soares, Willian and Tom Cairney should both be available here. Cup goalkeeper Marek Rodak should also start.
Manchester United have been flying since the break and have seen plenty of goals. They have scored at least two in 19 of their games and a big part of that has been Marcus Rashford’s incredible run of form. Last time out was the only time the Red Devils have failed to scored at least two at Old Trafford since October (17 games) and they have won all but two of those. Of those 17 games, 13 have seen at least three goals. Defensively, they are more vulnerable without Casemiro and Erik ten Hag described him as having a “huge impact” on the game. It is no coincidence that they conceded 11 shots, four corners and had just 39% of possession in the second half alone against Southampton last time out following his red card and they conceded 25 shots against Arsenal when they lost 3-2 without him. Heavy defeats against Brentford and Manchester City also were without the Brazilian.
Fulham games have seen plenty of goals at both ends of the pitch so far this season. There have been three or more goals in 65% of Fulham’s league games, falling slightly to 62% away from home but they still attack teams away from Craven Cottage, both scoring and conceding exactly 17 goals. The Cottagers have conceded at least two in 54% of away league games and United will want to attack that, but they have also scored plenty too – only failing to score in 23% of matches. Their last two games have seen eight goals and they have conceded three on both of those occasions. The league fixture between these two sides ended 2-1 and saw this selection land.
Manchester United have seen plenty of cards in their games this season, being shown an average of 2.54 cards per game at Old Trafford and receiving at least one in every league game, at least two in 77% and at least three in 62%. The visitors have the worst disciplinary records in the league. Away from home, there have been at least three cards in 92% of Fulham matches, at least four in 85% and at least five in 69%. They have also received three bookings or more in 85% of their away league matches this season, drawing at least two in 95% of matches. Last time out they did not receive a card against Arsenal, but Marco Silva described them as “too soft” suggesting that they should come out firing here, especially given it is a cup match.
The referee is Chris Kavanagh for this one. He has refereed a mixture of Premier League and Championship games this season but has averaged 3.74 cards per game across his career, showing four or more cards in just under half of his matches (49.75%).
Manchester United have conceded plenty of shots on target so far this season, averaging 3.96 per game in the league. Since the start of February, Manchester United have played 13 games, conceding exactly four per match in that time with this selection landing in eight of those 13. In games the weekend of European fixtures for the Red Devils, they have conceded more corners. On the Premier League Sunday following Europa League games this season, Manchester United have played eight games, conceding 30 shots on target in those games with this selection landing in five of those matches. Even more specifically, in the four games after travelling across Europe (to Tirsaspol, Omonia, Sociedad and Barcelona), the Red Devils have conceded 10 goals from 18 shots on target (4.5 per game). They now travel back from Betis and tend to concede more shots without Casemiro on the pitch.
Fulham are around average for shots on target in Premier League matches this season, averaging 3.74 per match – the 12th most in the division. In their last ten games, they have had 46 shots on target with this selection landing in eight. Despite their performance against Arsenal last week arguably being their worst of the season, they still managed 12 shots with two on target. In their league game against Manchester United, they had seven shots on target. We need them to get just three here.
Manchester United average 5.33 corners per game at home this season, having at least five in 75% of them and at least six in 58% of them. Their corners for stats in their last nine at home are: 7 (with ten men), 8, 8, 1, 6, 6, 5, 5, 8 meaning that this selection has landed in eight of their last nine at Old Trafford.
Fulham concede an average of 5.92 corners per game away from home this season, with their opponents having at least five in 62% of matches, six in 54% and eight or more in 38%. Since November, they have played seven league away games and their opponents’ corner counts in those matches are: 2, 10, 6, 10, 6, 1 (against nine men), 9.
