St James’ Park plays host to another brilliant European clash as Newcastle face German giants Borussia Dortmund. Less than a month after their 4-1 thrashing of Paris Saint-Germain, Tyneside will welcome another challenger, whilst seeking another Champions League night to remember. This is the first head-to-head fixture between these two sides, and with some ever-crucial points up for grabs in the ‘Group of Death’, another exciting encounter is on the cards.
Newcastle have won six of their last eight games and it seems like European nights at St James’ Park could be one of the most difficult away fixtures in the competition. Currently sitting in first place of Group F, and being strongly supported by the bookies to take three points in this matchup, Eddie Howe could well be on his way to sealing progression to the knockout stage.
The visitors have had European form elude them so far this year, sitting bottom of the group with a single point. However, in the domestic scene, Borussia Dortmund arrive undefeated after a fifth straight Bundesliga victory, marking 25 home games unbeaten in all competitions – perhaps the return fixture will see more optimism for Edin Terzic’s side.
We’re on the lookout for fouls, corners and goals, all of which will be covered in this article using the Newcastle v Borussia Dortmund Cheat Sheet. The sheet offers superb insight into where the value lies in this encounter. You don’t want to miss out…

St James’ Park love European nights
Newcastle have only lost one of their 29 European competition home fixtures, having won a remarkable 21 of those, and this pivotal fixture will hopefully channel some of that history.
Domestic success has returned after a difficult start to the season, with the Magpies moving into sixth place in the Premier League this weekend. Newcastle also boast the title of the top goalscoring team in the Premier League with 24 goals coming from a variety of players, a testament to their quality squad depth.
The Group of Death sentence for Borussia Dortmund
The 1997 European champions now find themselves teetering on the brink of elimination in the group stage, following a lacklustre 0-0 draw against PSG a few weeks ago. Their recent goal drought in the Champions League, spanning three consecutive matches, mirrors the number of times they failed to score in the previous 28 games. Edin Terzic is banking on a transformation from shooting practice to goalscoring success.
However, despite their European struggles, Borussia Dortmund have enjoyed a strong start in this year’s Bundesliga campaign. They currently hold the fourth position, neck and neck with the mighty Bayern Munich, following their sixth win of the season and a string of five consecutive victories. Die Schwarzgelben are eager to carry over some of their domestic success to the European stage, where they’ve been notably goal-shy in this year’s campaign.
Julian Brandt and Marco Reus are certainly flourishing this season with seven and five goal contributions respectively, and will be hoping to inspire some attacking threat. Brandt is having his best start to a Bundesliga campaign in a Dortmund shirt and after his promising performances against both PSG and AC Milan, eyes will be on him once again tonight.
🎯 Newcastle offensive stats: I’s on Isak
Alexander Isak has been pivotal to Newcastle’s strong attacking figures this year and with Eddie Howe already showing favour to his selection in Europe over Callum Wilson, we can expect the Swede to make his mark again on Wednesday.
Currently the third top goalscorer in the Premier League, Isak has racked up an impressive 0.98 xG per 90 minutes achieved through his 3.09 shots per game, exactly the goal-hungry traits you want in your striker.
With 60% of those shots hitting the target, he’s a justifiable short price to hit the target but does provide. With the Swede yet to open his Champions League account, he’ll be keen to get into dangerous areas.
🎯 Dortmund offensive stats: Set piece threat must be prepared for
The stats don’t lie, being pro-Dortmund corners could be huge value selection. The Magpies have looked unconvincing in gaining and conceding corners this season. Having taken the fifht-least corners in the Premier League (40) with an average of only 4.44 corners per game. Eddie Howe’s side are equally as likely to concede corners, facing 4.33 per game.
Newcastle lost 8-1 on the corner count in their home outing against PSG, 6-1 in their bore draw away at AC Milan, and only registered two corners in their following fixture v West Ham. Granted, Newcastle racked up a strong tally of seven at the weekend against Crystal Palace, but we doubt to see such a dominant performance this time around.
Borussia Dortmund on the other hand have been loving the corners domestically and in the Champions League, but have shown vulnerability in conceding them. They conceded ten to PSG and seven to AC Milan, very similar numbers to the Magpies but they have taken a higher amount of corners in that time.
You can back Dortmund in the corner match bet market to boost the odds of your bet builder significantly.
🛑 Newcastle defensive stats: Vulnerable Toon Army captain?
Jamaal Lascelles has found himself back in the starting XI due to the absence of Sven Botman.
Despite his recent return to the side, making only three full Premier League appearances, he has already racked up seven fouls in that time, just over half the numbers of top fouler Bruno Guimaraes who has featured in every fixture.
This is averaging out at 2.19 fouls per 90 minutes and with the potential absence of Sandro Tonali, this could leave Lascelles more at risk of committing a foul, certainly one to look at for a Newcastle v Dortmund bet builder.
🛑 Dortmund defensive stats: BVB surely won’t roll over like the Parisians
Borussia Dortmund have displayed genuine defensive promise this season, having conceded just eight goals in eight games and posting the fourth-lowest xGA in the Bundesliga at 10.03, a testament to their consistently high-quality performances.
Despite going down 2-0 to PSG in matchday one, it was a valiant effort from the backline and they stood up and put their bodies on the line. The same may be the case, and may have to be the case if they are get something, at Newcastle but the hosts should not expect to run riot like they did last time out in the competition or as they have done multiple times in the Premier League already this term.
