FC Sion v FC Zurich
🏟
Sunday 20th February – 1:15PM KO
The seemingly irrepressible charge of FC Zurich to their Swiss Super League title since 2009 continues on at the Tourbillon on Sunday afternoon as they meet FC Sion in Round 22. The FCZ fans will certainly be in high spirits given their current standing, and the FC Sion fans too, as they push for a top-five finish in the league for the first time since 2017. It is a sharp contrast for both compared to last season where the home side finished in the relegation play-off with opponents FC Zurich just five points ahead.
FC Sion may have banished any relegation fears this season, but their inability to piece together a consistent run of form has kept them just on the fringes of a top-half finish. Their erratic nature is best summed up by their impressive 3-3 draw at St. Jakob-Park in Round 20 that was promptly followed up last weekend by a narrow away defeat to Luzern. That result was only the second win for Luzern in twenty-two matches in this campaign.
A match against FC Lugano is usually a difficult task for any side in this league, both FC Basel and Young Boys have found that out to their cost, but FC Zurich seem to have the answer against the side from Ticino. Antonio Marchesano, Wilfried Gnonto and Assan Ceesay all found the net in an impressive 3-0 victory, a sixth consecutive win and clean sheet over Lugano. The result also marked FCZ’s ninth win in a row, something they last achieved back in 2006.
While their victory last weekend was routine, FCZ have not found it so easy away to Sion in recent years. In eleven of the last fourteen fixtures, both teams have found the net. I expect goals again.

Grasshoppers v Young Boys
🏟
Sunday 20th February – 3:30PM KO
It was a much-needed return to winning ways for Grasshoppers last weekend as they joined the growing list of clubs to easily defeat Lausanne this season. The two-nil victory was their first since the return from the winter break and also snapped a four-game winless run as the promoted side were boosted above Sion and up to sixth in the table.
Young Boys also returned to winning ways in their important 3-1 home victory over FC Basel in the capital. Their 3-3 draw in the previous weekend with St. Gallen was yet more evidence of the frailties displayed by the four-in-a-row champions this season, but they bounced back in emphatic fashion, coming from behind to all but eliminate FCB from the title race and just about keep their head above water themselves.
Grasshoppers have not found much home comfort at the Letzigrund in recent weeks, they have not won in their last five matches at the stadium and boast a better record on the road. They also haven’t kept a clean sheet at home in twenty-three league matches, stretching back to their previous spell in the top-flight back in 2018.
YB’s last three victories away from the Wankdorf have all been impressive, scoring seventeen goals, but those results are the only three wins in their last seven away days. It is a poor run for the champions and they simply can’t afford any more slip-ups with such a large points gap between themselves and Zurich.
Neither of these sides have been convincing of late. Grasshoppers are capable of causing any team in the league problems on their day, and they do typically score at home, but they can’t clean sheets. YB have kept only two away clean sheets this season and can’t be trusted on the road, so expect both teams to score here.

Servette v Luzern
🏟
Sunday 20th February – 3:30PM KO
Servette led their away fixture against St. Gallen at kybunpark last weekend inside the first two minutes, however, they would be trailing in the game just eight minutes later and were eventually on the end of a chastening 5-1 defeat. It was the second time this season that SFC have conceded five away from home, continuing their miserable run away from the Stade de Geneve, winning only two of their games in the league on their travels.
It was a landmark moment for Luzern in their home victory over Sion as the club lifted themselves from the bottom of the table and into the relegation play-off spot with only their second win of the season. It remains to be seen if this result will finally awaken a side that many believe has too much talent to be underperforming in the league like it has. Their visit to Geneva will be a good indication of whether Luzern have turned a corner or if the result at the swissporarena last time out was nothing more than a blip.
SFC have been comfortable winners in both meetings at home and away so far against Luzern, but this has generally been a tight fixture over the years and both sides trade victories consistently. This season, the Stade de Geneve hasn’t quite been the fortress it has been in the last few years, and the home side simply can’t keep the goals out. Their two-nil win over bottom club Lausanne was their first clean sheet in twenty-five matches at home. Luzern certainly aren’t free-scoring but their victory last weekend should boost their confidence to finally show their quality and start scoring goals.
