Wuhan Yangzte v Shanghai Shenhua
🏟
Tuesday 12th July – 10:30AM KO
It is a mark of how much Shanghai have improved that their fans are disappointed that they are ‘only’ in fourth but they have dropped just seven points in the nine games so far this season and have lost just one and drawn two.
Wuhan won the first three games this season and looked set for a title challenge but the team’s defensive issues caught up with them and there is just too much space at the back for the holding midfielders to cover which leaves the defence exposed too often. It is telling that Wuhan have failed to keep a clean sheet all season.
Shanghai were too good when the two teams met earlier in the season and have only been outclassed once this season and that was a 4-2 defeat to leaders Wuhan Three towns. In all the other games, Take that game out of the equation then Shenhua have conceded just four goals in eight league games. It won’t be easy then for Wuhan, a team that struggles to find the net, can penetrate that defence. Shanghai weren’t at their best in the 1-0 win over Hebei earlier in the week but got the job done and didn’t expend that much energy. That should stand them in good stead for this test.
Shenhua will be desperate to finish well and if they win, could end up in second as the season goes into the break. That would be a great way to end and Shanghai should have too much for Wuhan in attack and are too disciplined in defence.

Shanghai Port v Wuhan Three Towns
🏟
Tuesday 12th July – 11:30AM KO
Shanghai Port have started to climb the table after a slow start to the season. They have taken ten points from the last four games and are looking to get into the top five ahead of the season break. The latest victory was only a 1-0 win against struggling Guangzhou. That came courtesy of a late penalty and it was a sluggish performance from Shanghai who looked a little tired or perhaps complacent. The return of Oscar has given the team a lift but the Brazilian has still to find his match sharpness after missing most of the season.
Shanghai have a number of injuries, especially in defence with lynchpin Zhang Linpeng out and there is a question over his replacement Wei Zhen also.
The last game was the first clean sheet kept after four games of conceding and that could be the problem for Shanghai as they are coming up against the most attacking team in the history of the Chinese Super League. Wuhan are averaging three and a half goals every game and just have too much for almost every team they meet. It is hard to imagine that they won’t score against Shanghai as they have too much firepower and threats from all areas of the pitch.
Wuhan are already certain of being top of the table entering the break but they have a chance to open a four point lead at the top and that is plenty of motivation. With Shanghai’s injuries and Wuhan’s amazing form, then they should be taking another three-point haul.

Tianjin v Cangzhou
🏟
Tuesday 12th July – 12:30PM KO
This is a meeting between two teams that have struggled in front of goal this season and have a combined total of one goal a game each. Both are coming into this game in uncertain form. Tianjin have lost their last two and Cangzhou have failed to win any of the last eight after winning the first game.
Tianjin will be slight favourites but have been unpredictable so far this season and have struggled to score consistently. Their strikers have failed to really get going but the team is also struggling to create clear chances.
Cangzhou are desperate to end the stage with a victory. They have struggled for goals this season with just seven from nine. Cangzhou usually cede possession to the other team and look to hit on the counter. It hasn’t been working and the number of chances they are making is also disappointing.
Tianjin often play the same way but will have to make more of the running against Cangzhou and ran out 2-0 winners. They scored two goals early in the game and then sat back and allowed Changzhou to come at them but they were just not good enough and struggled to make clear chances.
The same tactic is likely against Tianjin but while Changzhou have failed to keep clean sheets against the better teams in the division, Tianjin don’t have the attacking quality of many of the others and will likely struggle to break down the Cangzhou backline.
The team that scores first will shut up shop.
