🥇 Lawrence Shankland Top Goalscorer
📈 Odds: 5.0
Last season’s runaway top goalscorer is an excellent price at 5.0 to repeat the trick, with Hearts liable to lean heavily on the former Dundee United striker’s prowess in front of goal this season.
Shankland proved himself to be the best finisher in Scotland last season, despite scoring only once in the opening eight matches of the campaign. Thereafter, he barely missed a beat, finding the net in a multitude of different ways. This flexibility will be priceless once again this season, particularly with Hearts often changing their tactics to suit individual opponents.
Last season was no flash in the pan, either. In 2022/23, the forward, who will turn 29 on August 10, also hit 24 goals, the same tally as he has managed in consecutive seasons.
One of the secrets to Shankland’s success has been being consistently available for Hearts. Over the course of two league seasons, he has missed just a couple of matches: one due to injury and one because of suspension.
With Hearts likely to be a strong force in the Premiership once again this season, Shankland is likely to break the 20-goal barrier once again, and that will put him in strong contention to finish as the league’s leading marksman for a second successive year.
🥇 Shankland to win the Golden Boot
🥇 Kyogo Furuhashi Top Goalscorer
📈 Odds: 4.0
Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi is coming off a somewhat disappointing campaign in which he managed just 14 Premiership goals, yet more is expected of the Japanese striker given key midfielder Matt O’Riley is likely to depart before the close of the transfer window.
Furuhashi’s form in front of goal last season was puzzling. After netting four in the first five games of the season, he set himself up for a prolific campaign, which he had achieved a year earlier. In that campaign, he scored 27 goals.
He retained his ability to score against the better teams, bagging five strikes last season against Rangers and Hearts, which hints towards the fact that he will be elevating his game again now his team really need him again.
The 29-year-old is particularly important for Celtic given they don’t currently have an alternative in the centre-forward position. This means he can expect to play a high number of minutes, maximising his chances of scoring goals.
The 29-year-old boasts an impressive record of being fit and available. Last season, for example, he was an ever-present in the league, while in his previous campaign he missed only a couple of fixtures. Expect him to be similarly involved this term, and playing with the likely title winners should furnish him with plenty of opportunities to exceed the 20-goal mark again.
🥇 Furuhashi to win the Golden Boot
🥇 Cyriel Dessers Top Goalscorer
📈 Odds: 6.50
Cyriel Dessers was a much-lamented figure at Rangers last season, yet his goalscoring numbers were ultimately respectable. The Nigeria international scored a total of 13 goals, finding the net steadily throughout the season.
If Rangers are in something of a state of crisis following a summer of upheaval and drama away from the field, the hope is that the 29-year-old striker is now settled enough to return a sizeable haul of goals in the Premiership.
Key for him will be starting the campaign well. He will come under pressure from Danilo, but it is likely to be several weeks before the Brazilian is fit to start. Dessers will need to hammer down his starting position by scoring regularly in the early weeks of the campaign if he is to retain the centre-forward role and maximise his chances of scoring.
He was available for every game Rangers played last season and accumulated the fifth-most minutes in the squad. It may be that Danilo’s return after missing out since December actually helps him in some way, providing the opportunities for rest that simply did not come last season.
This is a make-or-break campaign for Dessers. Either he finds his marks as one of the Gers’ leading scorers or he finds himself facing a move by the end of the campaign.
