Both of these teams suffered big losses to Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively, in midweek, but this is no easy fixture for either team to get back to winning ways straightaway.

Atleti had their seven-match winning streak snapped by Barcelona, so it will be interesting to see if they can re-establish that form.

📈 Athletic Bilbao v Atletico Madrid Form & Stats

Athletic Club sit in eighth in La Liga, their recent results have been very up and down, but this has to be taken in context. They have lost to Real Madrid, Barcelona, away at Real Sociedad, away at Newcastle, away at Dortmund, and away at Villarreal. None of those defeats on their own is particularly shameful, but combined within a fairly short period of time it looks problematic for a club that qualified for the Champions League last season.

Open play goals have been an issue for Athletic. They have scored only six goals from open play in 15 matches in the league, and they are generally underperforming their expected goals, 19.7 xG but only 14 goals scored in the league.

Atleti, on the other hand, had been on a really consistent run until meeting Barcelona in rampant mood in midweek. Their slow start to the La Liga season means that they sit off the pace in the title race, but Atleti look a strong bet to finish in the top four once again.

Diego Simeone's side have been largely congruent, by which I mean they have generally scored and conceded the number of goals they might've expected according to performance data. Unsurprisingly, given recent history, Atleti are consistently third in most performance metrics in La Liga, including expected goals, shots on target, big chances created, and touches in the opponents’ box.

📔 Athletic Bilbao v Atletico Madrid Formation & Team News

It is likely that Athletic Club will line up in a 4-2-3-1 system. This has been a consistent approach for a number of years, and probably allows the best from the likes of Nico Williams on the left.

Oihan Sancet will return to the team after suspension here which should help the team create more in the final third. No other changes are expected, but there could be some rotation given the midweek action.

Atleti still stick to their 4-4-2 shape. There are a number of doubts and a lot of potential changes for Simeone to consider here. Alex Baena and Jonny Cardoso were both removed from the Barcelona match, whilst Koke and Conor Gallagher are ready to play. Alex Sorloth could partner Julian Alvarez up front.
