Saturday’s 21/1 FA Cup Card Betting Tips
Preston receive more yellow cards per game than any other Championship side (2.68), whilst Burnley draw the fifth-most cards per game (2.18). Add to that the spice of this game being a Lancashire derby and everything seems to point towards a high card tally here, especially for the hosts.
Of all the players in this Preston side, the one offers the best value to pick up a card is Andrew Hughes. The 32-year-old defender has fouled in 12 of his last 13 starts for Preston, including 2 fouls in that clash with Burnley. Hughes has fouled 1.37 times per 90 in the Championship this season.
He has been booked in 2 of his last 4 starts for the club, and faces a slightly different challenge to the one he faced when these sides met at Deepdale a fortnight ago, as he is likely to be one of two centre-backs, instead of playing wide in a 3.
Though Zian Flemming, who won 3 fouls in the last meeting between these two sides may not feature, Hannibal is expected to start again here, either in an attacking midfield role or playing off the right, which puts him up against Hughes. He has drawn 2.82 fouls per 90 in all competitions for Burnley and should put the Preston defender under plenty of pressure.
He will also be in close proximity to Manuel Benson who has already won 3 fouls for Burnley in extremely limited minutes (playing just 75 mins in total so far this season), and Ashley Barnes, who won 2 fouls in the Fourth Round against Southampton. He is averaging 1.36 fouls drawn per 90 in all competitions this season.
At odds of 5.50, Hughes is priced up as the third-least likely player from either side to be booked here, a price which makes little sense considering the players he will be up against, and his recent fouling tendencies.
Plymouth midfielder Adam Randell offers an attractive price to be booked against Man City in their clash at the Etihad on Saturday evening.
Randell has fouled 1.10 times per 90 in the Championship this season, but those numbers have increased of late, with the 24-year-old committing 1.95 fouls per 90 in his last 9 games in all competitions.
Across this span Randell has fouled 16 times, fouling in 8 of these 9 games. He has fouled with even more intensity in his 4 games for the club since that win over Liverpool, fouling 3 times v Millwall, and 2 times against both Blackburn and Cardiff. He was booked in all 3 of these games, making it 3 cards in his last 4.
With Pep Guardiola likely to go strong with his team selection thanks to City having a full week until their next game, as well as this being the club’s last chance at a trophy this season, Randell can expect to be up against Omar Marmoush and Phil Foden, who have won 2.26 and 1.44 fouls per 90 in all competitions respectively.
City have drawn double digit fouls in both of their FA Cup clashes this season and we expect this to be a competitive affair. One of these games was an 8-0 thrashing and the other a nervy 2-1 win, suggesting that game state is unlikely to decrease the fouls committed by the visitors here.
Plymouth have nothing to lose and we would expect them to go all out here, which could lead to a spike in foul numbers. The Pilgrims have put up double-digit foul numbers in 7 of their last 8 games in all competitions, including at least 13 fouls in 4 straight games. If the numbers are similar here, then we should expect Randell to be heavily involved, putting himself in the firing line for a card.
