Chelsea welcome Brentford for Liam Rosenior’s first Premier League game as head coach. The Blues beat Charlton 5-1 in the FA Cup in his first game in charge of the side, though fell to a 3-2 defeat against Arsenal during the week in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi final tie.

Brentford come into this West London Derby in good font having avoided defeat in each of their last six matches across all competitions. Keith Andrews’ side have struggled on the road this term with seven defeats from their 10 away matches.

📈 Chelsea v Brentford Form & Tactics

Chelsea put in a decent display against Arsenal during the week, but it wasn’t enough to get them a positive result with Rosenior’s side set to travel to the Emirates in a few weeks with a one goal deficit. The Blues were without Palmer, James and Caicedo for that clash - arguably their three most important players - so to come out of the tie just one goal behind Arsenal is a decent result.

Liam Rosenior isn’t going to be afforded much patience by the Chelsea fan base, who didn’t react particularly strongly to that 3-2 defeat during the week. It’s important that Rosenior gets his first win in the Premier League here as the atmosphere around Stamford Bridge is already quite sour and could worsen quickly with a protest against the ownership planned ahead of this game.

Chelsea’s general form at Stamford Bridge this season hasn’t been good enough with the Blues winning just four of their 10 home games in the Premier League this term. Recent form in the Premier League has also been an issue for Chelsea with the Blues failing to win any of their last five matches in the top flight, despite having some pretty winnable games in this recent sequence.

Brentford are flying under Keith Andrews and currently sit fifth in the Premier League having avoided defeat across their last six matches in all competitions. Their away record will be a bit of a concern ahead of this fixture, but they did manage to hold Chelsea to a 2-2 draw when the sides clashed at the Gtech Community Stadium earlier in the season.

Brentford also have a pretty strong record at Stamford Bridge, they’ve made the short trip across West London four times in the Premier League since earning promotion and have won three of these games. Chelsea’s only success against Brentford at Stamford Bridge came last season when the Blues edged out the Bees by a 2-1 score line.

📔 Chelsea v Brentford Formation & Team News

We’ve seen glimpses of how Liam Rosenior will set up this Chelsea side, though for now I think he’s just trying to keep things simple. His team selection against Arsenal wasn’t anything too drastic or tactically impressive, but the players were all profiled in the right positions which is a good sign as it shows that Rosenior understands that it would be naive to try and implement his full tactical vision having joined midway through the season.

We can expect Chelsea to line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape, Rosenior’s preferred shape on the ball is a 3-4-2-1 structure but it’s likely that we see Chelsea build to this shape rather than adopt it straight away. Palmer and James are still doubts for this game, while Chelsea are battling a flu outbreak which saw Delap and Gittens pull out of the game against Arsenal during the week.

Brentford will line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape, which may look like a 4-4-2 at times as they look to secure things at the back on the road. Keith Andrews has done an excellent job so far and has kept his approach simple, Brentford are quite a direct side and rank third in the Premier League for long balls (23.0 per game), though this approach is proving to be effective with the Bees ranking fifth for expected goals (34.8).

There aren’t many major injury concerns for Brentford, Fabio Carvalho is a long term absentee though Keith Andrews should have a near fully fit squad to choose from for this West London Derby.
