Thursday’s Europa Conference League Accumulator Tips
Brondby v KF Llapi
The Danish team are one of the biggest and most successful in Danish history, and though they only managed 2nd in the Superliga last season, they were only a point away from the title in a really exciting title race.
Brøndby look to be regaining their position near the top of Danish football having suffered something of a downturn previously. They played the UEFA qualifying rounds in 2022 when they despatched Pogon Szczecin of Poland 4-0 at home and even beat Basel 1-0 at home despite going out after the away leg.
FC Llapi are from Kosovo, and are at this stage having already lost home and away to Wisla Krakow in the first Europa League qualifying round. Brøndby are a harder draw than even Krakow, so it looks very tough for the Kosovans.
Indeed, Llapi have played three previous UEFA qualifying ties and have lost all three of their away legs 0-2. These were against Krakow, and also Buducnost Podgorica, and FC Shkupi, a repeat of the same scoreline against a much tougher opponent would see this leg land.
Maccabi Haifa v FC Sabah
The Israeli side are vastly experienced in UEFA competition. They competed in The Champions League group stages in 2022/23 and the Europa League group stages in 2023/24.
Haifa were runners-up in the Israeli top tier last season, in what was a very difficult season for everyone. The key aspect to Haifa’s success was the strike pairing of Frantzdy Pierrot and Dean David, who ended with 26 goals each last season.
Last season’s qualifying rounds saw Haifa win 2-1 against Hamrun Spartans of Malta, 4-1 against Sheriff of Moldova, 3-1 against Slovan Bratislava, and drew 0-0 v Young Boys of Switzerland.
FC Sabah were only formed in 2017, but this is their second consecutive UEFA qualifying effort. They beat Latvia’s RFS home and away last year, but they were knocked out by Serbia’s Partizan after a 0-2 away loss.
Last year’s 3rd place in the Azeri First Division was a step down from 2nd the previous season, they actually won 23 points less than in 2022/23, so this version of Sabah looks less impressive than even last year.
St Gallen v Tobol Kostanay
The Swiss side fell away after a really strong beginning to their domestic campaign saw them challenging for the title halfway through the Super League.
The Kazakh team, Tobol Kastanay, have UEFA experience, but haven’t made much of an impact in group stages. One potential fly in the ointment for this bet is that Tobol travelled to Switzerland this time last year and won 3-1 against Basel.
However, it would transpire that Basel would go on to have a desperately poor season in the Swiss Super League, being in relegation trouble for the majority of the season despite being traditionally the biggest club and largest budgeted team in Switzerland.
Tobol also had a poor season in 2023, finishing down in 8th place in the Kazakh top tier, only qualifying for this competition via the cup. Also, this current 2024 season in Kazakhstan hasn’t been much better, especially away from home. Tobol have won only once away in six matches so far this season.
St Gallen’s home form was really solid in 2023/24. They retained the second best home record in the Super League despite a drift down to fifth overall.
This is St Gallen’s first UEFA match since the COVID affected 2020 campaign so the home fans will be right behind the team and no doubt will provide plenty of inspiration.
