Value Outsider Picks

France (2.88) are way too short for me to consider backing them now, they’ve looked really good but I still have question marks over their backline against a truly elite side. They’ll have to beat Morocco and then probably Spain to reach the final, that’s a really tough run even for a top side.

I’d mainly be looking at Norway (15.00) and Switzerland (34.00) if you wanted to have an outside shout in the outright market from here. Norway would be a price worth taking to cover the eventuality of England falling short, we’re already on them to reach the final and to win the World Cup so it would be silly to back them again now they’re down to 5/1. 

I fancy Switzerland against Argentina too, Lionel Messi’s side have got really, really lucky so far and although there is an air of inevitability about Argentina from their comebacks - better sides than Egypt and Cape Verde would have closed out those victories and Switzerland could have the perfect level of experience and organisation to finally catch them out.

Pre-Tournament Picks

Two of our three picks to win the World Cup have made it to the quarter-finals. I expected a lot more from Portugal, who should have really been on the other side of the draw (if they had topped their group), which would have been a kinder run to the latter stages of the tournament.

Spain and England are still alive though and look really solid, Spain are yet to concede a goal at the World Cup and face Belgium next in the quarter-finals, while England just earned one of their best ever results in recent memory with a 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca. 

Those nations are on opposite sides of the draw too, so there’s every chance that they could meet in the final, which would continue a long-running pattern of Spain and England meeting in a final over recent years across various age groups, including the final of the most recent European Championship.

I’m still keen on England (not biased, I promise), my best bet for them was to reach the final @ 3/1, and I like their chances given that their run is now Norway in the quarter-finals and either Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals.
