Perhaps the most significant fixture in this season’s Premier League title race so far will be contested at Anfield this evening when second-placed Liverpool host early pace-setters Arsenal in what promises to be a captivating battle on Merseyside.
Liverpool relinquished top spot to the Gunners last weekend when they failed to breach a resolute Manchester United defence.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp issued a rallying call to the club’s supporters in the aftermath of their 5-1 win over West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday evening, demanding more noise from the flat home support for Liverpool’s top-of-the-table tussle with Arsenal, and an energetic response from the Kop is anticipated.
The Gunners claimed four points from two action-packed meetings with Liverpool last season, though both contests really could have gone either way, and another high-octane showdown between the title chasers looks certain to play out later on.

🥅 Goals stats: Goals markets worth exploring at Anfield
Liverpool have been near-perfect at home this season, and their 0-0 draw with Man Utd last Sunday was the only blot on another otherwise perfect record that shows 12 wins from 13 competitive matches at Anfield.
However, the Reds have benefitted from a kind early run of games on Merseyside against a list of opponents they would always expect to beat, and in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, Liverpool arguably face their toughest test of the campaign to date at Anfield.
In last season’s corresponding fixture, Liverpool clawed their way back from two goals down to parity against the Gunners, though they lost the London leg of the teams’ double-header 3-2 after another contest that ebbed and flowed.
It’s just as tricky to pick a winner between these two evenly-matched outfits this evening, though a plunge into the goals markets offers some workable alternatives and there are options with value to choose from.
Liverpool generally only have one setting at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp and their full-throttle philosophy is usually a recipe for excitement. Ten of their 13 matches at Anfield this season have seen over 2.5 goals and the Reds’ clash with Arsenal could be just as open.
Liverpool (36 goals) and Arsenal (35 goals) have matched each other stride for stride in the final third since August, and both sets of attackers found joy in last season’s meetings between the clubs. Look for the forward players to shine again both teams to score could land for a third encounter on the spin.
Predictions:
🥅 Over 2.5 goals @ 1.62
🥅 Both teams to score @ 1.53
🎯 Shooting stats: Salah to shine against Arsenal again?
Mohamed Salah has been one of Arsenal’s chief tormentors in recent campaigns and the prolific Egyptian has scored nine career goals against the Gunners in the Premier League, the latest of which was bagged in the Reds’ last meeting with the Londoners in April.
With Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko not the most defensively robust at left back, winger Salah should have chances to inflict more damage this evening and backing the 31-year-old to notch his 12th league goal of the season seems like a logical move at 2.63.
Elsewhere, Salah’s fellow Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez offers value at 1.44 to register at least one shot on target. The Uruguayan’s finishing has drawn criticism from some quarters of late, however, he consistently gets himself into great positions and Nunez has lodged 18 shots on target in his 16 league appearances this season (10 starts).
On Arsenal’s side, big-game specialist Gabriel Jesus is the standout pick at 1.50 to have one or more shots on target. Jesus’ dynamism allowed him to clock at least one accurate attempt in seven of his last eight runouts for the Gunners, and the 26-year-old tested compatriot Alisson with strikes in each of Arsenal’s two league meetings with Liverpool last term.
Predictions:
⚽ Mohamed Salah to score anytime @ 2.63
🎯 Darwin Nunez to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.44
🎯 Gabriel Jesus to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.50
🟨 Cards and Fouls stats: Heated title clash anticipated
Liverpool and Arsenal rank among the Premier League’s four cleanest teams in terms of yellow cards collected this season, though there should be much more of an edge than usual at Anfield.
Eight cautions were brandished when the sides last met at that venue in April and with top spot in the Premier League on offer for the victors this evening, the tackles should fly with just as much ferocity.
With Chris Kavanagh – who has dished out at least four bookings in nine of the last ten matches he’s officiated – adjudicating, the potential for a card-fest feels even higher and backing over 3.5 of them to be handed out should be a safe inclusion at 1.40.
In terms of individuals, Liverpool’s Wataru Endo and Arsenal’s Kai Havertz both look like strong options to commit 2+ fouls at 1.44 and 1.73 respectively.
Busy ball-winner Endo has given away at least two free kicks in four of his last five appearances for the Reds and he seems intent on tackling his way to cult hero status at Anfield.
Kai Havertz meanwhile, can struggle to maintain his discipline when under pressure and the fiery German, who has committed more fouls (20) in the league than any other Arsenal player this term, could be tempted into harder tackles again in what should be an evening of intense action at Anfield.
Predictions:
🟨 Over 3.5 match cards @ 1.40
🛑 Wataru Endo to commit 2+ fouls @ 1.44
🛑 Kai Havertz to commit 2+ fouls @ 1.73
