📈 Liverpool v Fulham Form & Stats

Arne Slot has to be close to the exit door with Liverpool losing both of their matches since the international break, conceding six goals across these games without scoring themselves. Liverpool were not unlucky in these matches; they were easily outclassed by both Manchester City and PSG, which is a real concern for Arne Slot, as it puts pressure on them to finish in a Champions League spot via the Premier League.

Liverpool look a bit lazy to me at the moment. They are not pressing with the same intensity that carried them to the Premier League title last season, and their scoring power has also vanished, scoring 36 goals fewer than they did last season, with seven games of the season left to play.

This is a massive game for Liverpool in the context of the Champions League race. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Aston Villa all look to have more complicated tasks than Liverpool at home this weekend, so this is a big opportunity for Slot’s side to make up some ground in the battle for a Champions League finish.

Fulham have once again staved off the slight threat of relegation and look to be on course for one of their classic mid-table seasons. They could break into the European conversation with a strong end to the season, but I don’t think that the motivation will be there for the Cottagers, who have seen their seasons end quite uneventfully over the last few years.

Marco Silva is clearly a very capable coach, but I also think he can only take a side so far. That seems to be to the edge of Europe, though you feel as though if Fulham had backed Silva more, he would have been able to get a lot more out of this side. He deserves praise for keeping Fulham competitive in the Premier League, despite pretty much having the same squad as he did last season.

📔 Liverpool v Fulham Formation & Team News

Liverpool will line up in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-2-2-2, depending on how Slot perceives the threat that Fulham will offer. I’d guess that Slot would go more cautious in this game, given what is at stake for Liverpool, and also factoring in the vulnerability of his players who will be feeling a bit delicate after suffering bruising defeats to the likes of Manchester City and PSG.

Alexander Isak was welcomed back to action from the bench against PSG during the week, which is a bonus for Liverpool - but you’d assume his return has come a bit late in the season for Isak to have any tangible impact on Liverpool’s outcomes, given that it should take him a few weeks even to get back to full fitness. Alisson remains unavailable for Liverpool, as do Conor Bradley and Wataru Endo.

Fulham should line up in a 4-2-3-1. They haven’t strayed too far away from this shape all season, but if they do it tends to be a 4-4-2 shape - mainly when out of possession. Marco Silva always makes sure that they are organised and hard to beat, but this unravels a little for them when on the road with Fulham, conceding 25 goals across their 15 away matches in the Premier League this season.
