Wrexham v Bromley
Wrexham are at home which means one thing, this selection is going to be a Wrexham win and them to score goals.
Their record is insane at home this term. They have played 11 matches and won all 11. They have scored 42 goals in the process, scoring two or more in all but one match, and they missed a penalty in that one. They come into this game on the back of having won nine of their last 12 in the league and beating Championship Coventry City in the FA Cup 4-3. Furthermore, they should have a stronger XI available with Ollie Palmer and Anthony Forde rested at the weekend. Palmer and strike partner Paul Mullin have now scored 30 goals between them this season.
Bromley potentially come into this game a little fresher than their opponents having not played at the weekend. Bromley have won two of their last 11 matches, winning the xG battle just once. They have lost three of five away matches against the top eight and conceded three or more in each of those losses. They have conceded two or more goals in six of their seven defeats, all six against sides in the top 14, and conceded two or more in six of nine away matches against sides placed 16th or higher. There is also the issue coming into this game of Bromley fielding a pair of full-backs with less than ten senior matches combined between them – they will be tasked with defending overloads out wide and the back post against Palmer and Mullin.
Aldershot Town v Dagenham and Redbridge
All isn’t well at Aldershot Town. The sacking of Mark Molesley was somewhat divisive, even if fans were leaning towards the need to move on, but Ross McNeilly is already coming in for criticism, unhelped by two defeats against local rivals Woking over Christmas. McNeilly stoked fires after their weekend defeat against Notts County, questioning why supporters were booing and pulling the wool over their eyes a little with “we’ve had six wins in 12” when they have six of their last eight league matches and each of their last three. A change of shape didn’t help matters either. They’ve won the xG battle comfortably in one of their last eight league matches and their new signings may have talent but don’t help with the lack of physicality that continues to cost them. They had diminutive winger Ryan Glover starting in central midfield at the weekend.
Visiting supporters are still hoping for better but things have certainly improved since a barmy spell of 40 goals total over seven matches through September and early October. They come into this game having lost just three of their last 12 in the league and won five of their last seven, including away matches against Solihull Moors and Maidstone United. The weekend loss against high-flying Woking was their first decidedly poor performance since mid-October but is likely to see a key change made – the return of target man Paul McCallum. Furthermore, for the first time since the early weeks, McMahon has almost a full squad available to him.
Wealdstone v Chesterfield
Without wanting to be disrespectful, most associated with Chesterfield may feel a touch underwhelmed going from an FA Cup third round home tie against Championship West Bromwich Albion to a trip down south to part-time Wealdstone.
It’s exactly why I’m weary of betting against the hosts. Their record against the top sides isn’t great but these are the occasions they enjoy and they often pick up a good result or two. They’re in good form as well, winning five of their last nine to push themselves back into the top seven against the odds. The visitors, meanwhile, are in fine fettle themselves, their points-per-game record matching that of the top two across the campaign if you remove the week of three defeats in October.
What both sides are good for is goals. The hosts have changed formation recently to their benefit, moving to a 4-2-3-1 system rather than 3-4-2-1 and it has seen more goals in their games, at least three scored in five of their last with the other two games being entertaining affairs – a combined 22 shots in both. Having one of the league’s best creators, Max Kretzschmar, has been key to that. Chesterfield, meanwhile, have seen 70% of their league matches finish with three or more goals. They have scored two or more in 18 of their 23 league matches, keeping five clean sheets, and two or more in eight of 11 on the road, keeping one clean sheet. They even drew 3-3 in the aforementioned FA Cup tie
