Olympiacos to Win

I expect Olympiacos, who boast the superior form, both domestically and in Europe, to breeze past Pafos.

The Greek champions have stormed through their opening three league games, scoring nine without reply. This comes in stark contrast to Pafos, who have mustered a combined seven shots across their opening two games, and scraped three points on the opening day before falling to defeat last time out.

Pafos’ European record also fails to impress. They fell at the first hurdle last season, losing 8-2 on aggregate to Elfsborg in the first round of Europa League Qualifying, before dropping down to the ECL, where they were pretty average. Olympiacos, meanwhile, recorded five wins, three draws, and just two losses during their Europa League campaign. The hosts look good value to win by a couple of goals at odds of 2.10.

Over 3.5 Pafos Corners

Despite siding against them with respect to the full-time score, I think there’s value in backing Pafos to win at least four corners at 1.85.

They averaged just under six per game in the Cypriot first division last season, and were able to replicate this on the European stage too. Including the qualifiers, Pafos played 18 matches in the EL and ECL last season, during which they averaged over 6.2 corners per 90 - well above what we need here.

In addition, Olympiacos averaged 3.9 corners conceded per 90 in the Europa League last season.

  • This is the first-ever competitive meeting between Olympiacos and Pafos.

  • Olympiacos have won all three of their league matches to nil, scoring nine goals in the process.

  • The visitors have recorded a win and a loss, but the performances themselves have been disjointed and marked by poor discipline.

🔴 Olympiacos Off to a Flying Start

Olympiacos fans couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the season - three wins from three, nine goals, and zero conceded.

Their most recent match was by far their most impressive, as the reigning Greek champions trounced Panserraikos 5-0, although their opponents did go down to 10 men as early as the 35th minute.

Nonetheless, it isn’t always easy to capitalise on a numerical advantage, particularly when your opponents are willing to just sit back. In addition to the five goals, Olympiacos dominated 83% possession and conceded just a single shot all game.

🔵 Discipline And Creativity Both Letting Pafos Down

Despite being only two games in, there’s no escaping the fact that it’s been a poor start to the season for Pafos, who have looked blunt and disorganised.

Pafos may have taken three points from their opener against APOEL Nicosia, but the performance was anything but convincing. They mustered just three shots across the 90 minutes and racked up 20 fouls - hardly the sort of display that lingers fondly in the memory.

Things didn’t get much better last Saturday either. Up against an Apollon Limassol side that had lost their first two games by a combined score of 6-1, Pafos slumped to a 1-0 defeat.

They managed just four efforts all game, with discipline proving an issue once again for Pafos, who committed 16 fouls and picked up a red card for their troubles; mind you, their opponents trumped that with 18 fouls and two reds.

📊 Olympiacos v Pafos H2H

With this being the first-ever meeting between Olympiacos and Pafos, there’s no head-to-head form to lean on, but the points above go a long way to explaining why the Greek side are the bookies’ favourites.
