Wednesday’s Champions League Accumulator Tips
Bayern Munich v Arsenal
First up it’s Bayern Munich v Arsenal at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
Bayern Munich officially relinquished their domestic crown for the first time in a decade at the weekend and with wingers Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman injured and key defender Alphonso Davies suspended, the German giants should be vulnerable ahead of Wednesday’s quarter-final second leg.
However, there are doubts about Arsenal’s readiness to capitalise on their hosts’ troubles at the Allianz Arena. The Gunners are starting to show signs of collapse and their 2-0 reverse at home to Aston Villa on Sunday was a major confidence-denter, while they were also disappointing against Bayern at the Emirates Stadium last week (2-2).
Bayern lodged an xG figure nearly twice the size of Arsenal’s in the first leg (1.90 – 1.0) and amid talk of bottling and late-season capitulation in the Londoners’ camp, Thomas Tuchel’s side could complete the task against the wobbly Gunners in Germany.
Bayern Munich have advanced from a massive 17 of their last 18 knockout ties in the Champions League when avoiding a firstleg defeat, and they are also in the midst of a 14-game unbeaten surge on home soil in the competition.
Eight of Bayern’s last ten assignments in Munich also ended in victory for Die Roten and backing them to win either half against a jittery Arsenal side is favoured as a result.
Man City v Real Madrid
Next we turn to the Etihad Stadium for Man City v Real Madrid.
The six-goal thriller between these two sides in last week’s first leg in Spain somehow overdelivered against the pre-match hype, and a second blockbuster encounter between the heavyweights is in the works in Manchester here.
Both City and Real Madrid rested a few superstars in their domestic fixtures at the weekend including Phil Foden, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Toni Kroos, and with both teams likely to be re-energised, another goal-frenzy looks possible.
City have managed to keep only two clean sheets in their last ten matches in all competitions, and a classy Real frontline will expect to maintain their 100% strike rate in this season’s Champions League when they visit Manchester.
However, with Aurelien Tchouameni suspended and veteran Nacho likely to start in defence in the Frenchman’s absence, Real have a weakness at centre half that City can exploit and the free-scoring hosts are expected to go for the jugular.
With the three they notched in Madrid included, the European champions have plundered 16 goals across their last four matches, so expect them to net at least twice here. Entertainment levels should be sky-high on Wednesday evening, so backing both teams to score to land for the seventh time in the last eight meetings between these two sides looks a smart play.
