While the Scottish League Cup semis will steal the limelight (and I’ve even done a wee cards-centric preview of the two games here) there’s still plenty on the league docket to make up an accumulator. I’ve gone for my four favourite selections from across the top four SPFL divisions and it’s come out at a healthy 4/1 so have a read of why I’m backing my acca this weekend.
Motherwell v Hearts
🏆
Scottish Premiership
To kick off the acca let’s head to the Premiership in a match that looks great for goals between a Hearts side with ambitions of a proper push on the two sides above them and a Motherwell side keen to bookend the international break with back-to-back wins.
Prior to their 2-0 win over Aberdeen heading into the international fixtures, Motherwell had been winless in their last five but they’ve had little issue in our needed market. 12 of their 13 Premiership ties have seen at least two goals scored in them and it’s no surprise really. In Tony Watt they have one of the better strikers in the league and the current joint-top scorer in the division. Only the current top three (and that includes their opponents this weekend) have scored more than them in this campaign. They have been woeful at the back though and the fact that only Dundee and Ross County (two sides which have taken a couple of spankings this year) have conceded more than them is far from ideal from Graham Alexander but does make them ideal for this market.
Hearts boast an identical over 1.5 goals record of landing 12 in 13 games, with each of their six games on their travels seeing a minimum of two goals scored. They’re looking strong this season and the points buffer they have on them and the sides beneath them will be welcome. Due to the League Cup semis this weekend they could actually move into second and just three points behind league leaders Rangers if they get all three points at Fir Park this weekend. I think they could do just that but I suspect we’ll see at least a couple of goals as two sides more than capable in front of goal do battle.

Prediction: Over 1.5 Goals
Partick Thistle v Hamilton
🏆
Scottish Championship
I mentioned last week that a gap was quickly forming in the Championship between the top and bottom halves of the division and suspect we’ll see that gulf in quality once again this weekend. Hamilton are dire and should really struggle at Firhill against a side who have already pumped them this season.
These two met just over a month ago and to say the result was emphatic would be something of an understatement. Partick ran out 6-1 winners at Hamilton and I’ve seen little to suggest that Accies are capable of turning that humiliating loss into something more positive five weeks on. Just one of Accies six points on the road this season have come against any of the five sides in the right half of the league and I don’t see them adding to that shoddy tally this time around.
Partick have conceded just once (that late David Moyo consolation for Hamilton in the 6-1 loss) in their last 630 minutes of Championship football and have racked up consecutive wins over Killie and Ayr too. They’ve got probably the most effective strike force in the division (sorry Arbroath fans) in Zak Rudden and Brian Graham on top of what is looking a very formidable defence after shipping a few too many goals over the opening rounds of the new season. They should have little issue at either end this weekend and I really wouldn’t be too surprised to see them put another huge score past what is probably the worst side to be relegated down from the Premiership in a long time.

Prediction: Partick to Win
Alloa v Dumbarton
🏆
Scottish League One
To the third tier we go and, once again, we’re on the goal trail as struggling Dumbarton travel to Recreation Park to face an Alloa side well and truly in the goals. It’s been a very handy league for goals this season and I suspect we could be getting a fair few Flashscore notifications on Saturday afternoon from this tie.
Dumbarton are honking and haven’t won since September (a winless run of seven) though have still been consistent enough in front of goal, especially on their travels. All seven of their games away from Dumbarton have landed in today’s needed market, that’s, unsurprisingly, the best record in the division and the only side to boast a 100% record too. I wouldn’t bet against them conceding all three needed goals themselves in defeat this weekend, but they have proven that they can get on the scoresheet with regularity, even if the results and performances don’t come in such consistent fashion.
As for Alloa, five of their seven home ties have seen three or more goals in them and their form has been patchy since week one, goals have been a nice consistent for Barry Ferguson’s men. They’re equally porous as they are potent going forward which usually bodes well for this market and their last six in all competitions have witness a staggering 31 goals, that’s a goal every 17 minutes on average! Only East Fife’s games this season have seen as many goals as these two sides’ respective sets of 14 games and I suspect we’ll be in for a real treat between the two.

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals
Forfar v Cowdenbeath
🏆
Scottish League Two
I always find it satisfying when my four favourite selections come from each of the top four divisions and that’s exactly what’s happened this weekend as we head to League Two to bring home the acca. While it’s as clear as ever that Forfar will be competing for a best of the rest spot behind runaway leaders Kelty Hearts, there’s enough quality in the division to keep the Loons on their toes as they plot an instantaneous return to the third tier.
Cowdenbeath aren’t part of that quality I’m speaking about and do look in serious jeopardy already. It may prove to be the least entertaining division of the four this season, with Kelty almost certainly having the title wrapped up and Cowdenbeath looking certain to be heading into a relegation Play-Off come May. I’d be very surprised if they chose this weekend to kickstart their fight up the table and could seriously struggle against a Forfar side keen to get back to winning ways.
I can probably copy and paste this in throughout my articles this season but there is no shame in losing to Kelty Hearts as Forfar did (1-0 in Fife) last weekend. What is a bit more shameful is failing to win any of your last 13 in all competitions and not even troubling the scoring in any of your last four League Two games. That’s how Cowdenbeath come into this one and I suspect they’ll remain true to form as they travel to face a side who have only lost just four times all in all competitions season – twice to opposition far further up the pyramid with the other two coming against promotion rivals Kelty and Stirling.
