Switzerland v Spain
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 8th September at 19:45
🏆
Competition: Nations League
Both Spain and Switzerland had disappointing starts to their Nations League campaigns, with Spain being held to a goalless draw in Belgrade and Switzerland fell to two late Danish goals off the back of both Nico Elvedi and Granit Xhaka being sent off.
Another poor result for either would put them at serious risk of relegation to League B via the playoffs if they finish third, or automatic relegation from League A if they finish bottom of Group 4.
Switzerland v Spain Best Bets
Granit Xhaka captained Switzerland in both recent head-to-head games against Spain, but he will miss this fixture after receiving a red card against Denmark. In addition, Fabian Schar and Elvedi will be absent. Luis de la Fuente will be looking to get his troops back on track, so Spain to win at 1.70 looks a solid bet given how strong Spain have been in this competition over the years.
La Roja have proven themselves to be a potent attacking lineup, as they scored 15 goals in seven games at Euro 2024 en route to their fourth title. It’s worth noting though, that Spain also conceded in all four knockout fixtures. Switzerland scored in all five games at Euro 2024, so will be looking to exploit a shaky Spain defence in front of a home crowd – Both Teams to Score at 2.0 looks an especially big price.

📊 Switzerland Form and Stats
Switzerland were most recently outclassed in Copenhagen, as Denmark cruised to a 2-0 victory to kick off the 2024/25 Nations League campaign. Switzerland were the catalysts of their own downfall, as Nico Elvedi received a straight red card shortly after half-time for the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity, before Granit Xhaka also received his marching orders for a second yellow card in the 87th minute.
That forced Switzerland to sacrifice Ruben Vargas in favour of centre back Gregory Wuthrich, and play a deep block. The Swiss put up a valiant resistance, but eventually succumbed to two late goals. Patrick Dorgu scored in the 82nd minute, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg made sure of victory with the second goal in the 92nd minute.
Gregor Kobel ensured the scoreline didn’t get out of hand, as he made five saves, while Ricardo Rodriguez also registered a clearance off the line. Switzerland managed just one shot in the second half, coming from Zeki Amdouni in the 95th minute.
📊 Spain Form and Stats
Spain were held to a 0-0 draw in Belgrade, which was a surprising result given that Serbia were missing many senior players. On the one hand, Spain can consider themselves unfortunate not to have got on the scoresheet – they mustered up 21 shots, with Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic registering five saves.
On the other hand, La Roja were also lucky not to concede. Luka Jovic spurned a huge chance in the first-half, which would have seen his side take the lead. He found himself unmarked 10 yards out with the entire goal at his mercy, but somehow shot wide. Despite seeing just 26% possession, Serbia managed nine shots, as Spain looked vulnerable in transition at times.
Lamine Yamal was heavily involved in the attacking third for Spain, with 73 touches. He was unfortunate not to register a goal involvement, as he racked up ten crosses and one big chance created along with his four shots.
⚔️ Switzerland v Spain Head-to-Head
Both sides were pitted against each other in League A, Group 2 of the Nations League for the 2022/23 campaign. Under the management of Luis Enrique, Spain pulled off a 1-0 victory in Geneva, thanks to an early goal from Pablo Sarabia.
The Swiss fared much better in Spain, pulling off a shock 2-1 victory, despite seeing just 25% possession. Manuel Akanji and Breel Embolo got on the scoresheet, with both goals coming from corners. The two sides were evenly matched, with chances at a premium. There were just 14 total shots in Switzerland, split evenly with seven shots apiece. The two teams managed eight shots each in the reverse fixture in Spain.
Prior to that, Switzerland and Spain met in the Euro 2020 quarter-final. Chances were again few and far between in regular time, as the game eventually progressed to penalties. Spain prevailed in the shootout, before being eliminated in the proceeding round against Italy.
