I’ve put together my top three bet builder tips to assist you on Wednesday’s clash, and a Cheat Sheet for your own selections. Best of luck if you’re having a bet!
After their festive 6-3 win against Leicester City on Boxing Day, the Manchester based club will be searching for their record 36th win in a calendar year when they face Brentford at the Community stadium on Wednesday.
Brentford, despite showing promise at the start of the season, have faltered slightly in recent fixtures, notably losing their Boxing Day match against Brighton thanks to an exceptional volley from Leandro Trossard and rocket from their former striker Neal Maupay. Despite this, Thomas Frank’s men will be exceptionally proud of their 2021, gaining promotion to the premier league for the first time in the club’s history and establishing themselves in the league, with excellent wins against the likes of Arsenal during the campaign so far.
Brentford have proved to be a real challenge for the ‘big six’ at home with Liverpool and Arsenal failing to bring home 3 points and Chelsea winning a dogged 1-0. If City are to win their 10th game in a row they will have to win a hard-fought game at a stadium that has proved difficult for their contemporaries.
Brentford vs Man City Bet Builder Tips & Predictions
Man City Handicap (-1)
Brentford’s season can be summarised really as a lack of goals and a relatively poor defensive record. Scoring 21 and conceding 24, this includes the team allowing at least two goals in just under half their premier league games this season. This record paints an unpromising image against arguably one of the best Premier League teams the competition has seen in decades, highlighted by their previous mentioned feat of surpassing Liverpool’s record of 33 wins in a calendar year at 36, with this game still to be played in their 2021 fixtures.
City have won 9 consecutive games this season averaging 2.63 goals per game and scoring 2+ in 14 of their previous 20 fixtures. Not only is city the highest scoring team in the league this season already reaching the 50 mark, they have also been incredibly robust defensively even by their own high standards, keeping 12 clean sheets in their last 20 fixtures and only conceding 12 all season, that being 2 less than Burnley, the lowest scoring team in the league, have netted in total all season.
Despite Brentford being a new challenge for City, who have never played the side based in West London before, I think it is unlikely the Bee’s will add another loss to City’s stela record and with an away win priced at 1.14 City to win by 2 goals seems a much better money making opportunity at a well-priced 1.53 on Paddy Power.
Frank Onyeka to be shown a Card
Onyeka will likely feature in Brentford’s midfield on Wednesday having played in 15 of 17 and started in 9 of their games this season. Despite not starting against Brighton the suspension of Christian Nørgaard will likely mean Onyeka could be one of Thomas Franks first names on the sheet to play on Wednesday. He’s managed to accrue a whopping 4.09 fouls per game this season putting him top of the list when compared to other players on the two teams, far above Fernandinho in second at 3.33 who only averages 40 minutes per game. Despite only picking up 3 yellow cards, Onyeka’s poor discipline will have been highlighted by referee David Coote prior to this fixture. Similarly, the referee has averaged 5.4 yellows a game, which ranks him 4th amongst refs in England this season and suggests if Onyeka’s poor discipline continues on Wednesday, Coote will show no hesitation in brandishing a card.
Onyeka will be under serious pressure when facing City’s electric midfield on Wednesday. With player’s like Jack Grealish and Phil Foden averaging 3.15 and 1.3 fouls drawn per game respectively, all of Brentford’s midfield are at risk of going in the referee’s book. As a result, Onyeka looks well priced at 3.2 on Paddy Power to pick up a card on Wednesday.
Gabriel Jesus to have 1+ Shots on Target
With Phil Foden and Jack Grealish being dropped from the fist XI on Boxing day due to off-field behaviour it is unclear whether Pep Guardiola will reinstate the pair for Wednesday. However, within the packed Christmas schedule City will likely look to rotate their attacking trio significantly, leading to opportunities for players like Jesus who have played well from both the wings and down the centre this season. Jesus is averaging just under a shot on target per game at 0.95 and takes 2.85 shots per game. With Pep roulette in full affect the Spaniard will likely rest some of his higher profile players against newly promoted Brentford, leaving the bulk of the attack to their replacements.
If Jesus does start, which is more than likely as Pep will look to rest Mahrez on the right with the clash against Arsenal on New Year’s Day in mind, a shot on target priced at 1.25 looks like an excellent bet. This is because, the bulk of the attacking play will likely fall to him during the potential absence of key players like Bernado Silva and Raheem Sterling.
