🗓
The Quarter-Finals of the Championships is on Saturday 1st January
James Wade vs Mervyn King
🏆
Quarter-Final
⏱
Match due to start at 12:40pm
Two PDC stalwarts clash in the opening match of the Quarter-Finals. There have been 44 matches between the pair previously and it’s King who leads sway at 25-19.
King has survived two matches where he looked in all sorts of trouble, trailing 2-0 to Ryan Joyce and 3-1 to Raymond Smith he came back to win these matches 3-2 and 4-3 respectively.
The difference in these performances were that when he came back against Joyce he was playing well and got better when his opponent wilted. In the more recent match against Smith he never really hit his best form, looking increasingly hot on stage; he just kept his consistency better than his opponent who let the occasion get to him late on. He’s looking to reach his first Semi-Final since 2009.
Wade’s only played two matches to reach this stage as his third round opponent Vincent Van Der Voort had to withdraw due to Covid.
His two performances couldn’t have been more different, he defeated Maik Kuivenhoven 3-1 in his opening match averaging just 83.74. He then performed more as we’ve become accustomed to from him when he won 4-0 against the giant Dutchman, Martijn Kleermaker. This time he averaged 93.15 and put on an emphatic display of finishing to win with relative ease.
In these two matches he’s failed to register a 180 which is quite remarkable given he’s the Number Four seed. Even though he’s not a big 180 hitter I don’t think that will happen here and I think he’ll have too much over this longer format.

Prediction: James Wade to Win
Luke Humphries vs Gary Anderson
🏆
Quarter-Final
⏱
Match due to start at 2:15pm
According to the odds, this is predicted to be the closest game of the four games we can look forward to today.
Once again Humphries is another player to still be in having only played two games. These couldn’t have been more different. His opener he won 3-0 against Rowby-John Rodriguez losing just 2 legs whereas his second game he went all the way to a last set as he defeated Chris Dobey 4-3, digging deep and hitting a plethora of 180’s.
This will be a third Quarter-Final for him in four years and he’ll be hoping to advance past this stage for the first time and a lot here will depend upon on which Gary Anderson turns up.
The Flying Scotsman was much better in his most recent match against Rob Cross but his opponent didn’t really show up and only hit form late on. Staging a decent comeback he was kept at arms length by Anderson who closed out the match 4-3.
He’s still lucky to be in the event however and should’ve been eliminated by Ian White 4-2 who missed a match dart. White is notorious for not being at his best on stage and his old problems resurfaced as he lost a game he had in the palm of his hand.
The pair have met twice and it’s one win apiece with Luke winning their solitary meeting on TV when he was invited to be involved in a one-off match in the Premier League.
Humphries has had the better year reaching four finals whereas Anderson’s best is a Semi-Final. I think one of the rising stars of the game will be able to match the previous back to back winner of this event and take one step closer to the title than he’s ever managed before.

Prediction: Luke Humphries to Win
Peter Wright vs Callan Rydz
🏆
Quarter-Final
⏱
Match due to start at 7:40pm
Rydz has dropped just one set, winning four matches to reach this stage. Two 3-0 victories over Yuki Yamada and Brendan Dolan have been followed by a 4-0 victory over Nathan Aspinall and a 4-1 success against Alan Soutar. He could’ve arguably won his latest contest 4-0 too.
He’s looked calm, composed and not shown any signs of nerves as he’s breezed through this event so far. This has been on the back of a couple of wins in the floor this year and a Quarter-Final run in the Matchplay in the Summer.
The Matchplay winner was today’s opponent Peter Wright who breezed through that event averaging a huge 104.91 for the event.
There have been signs of that standard at times this week too, having way too much for each of his three opponents to date. He defeated an out of sorts Ryan Meikle 3-0, then built on that with a 4-2 success against Damon Heta. He tinkered with his darts in that match and trailed 2-0 before returning to his tried and trusted arrers as he reeled off four sets in stunning fashion.
In his final game he defeated Ryan Searle 4-1 in what many anticipated to be a close encounter, Snakebite was just too good on the day and a 151 checkout from Ryan Searle won him a set. Other than that it wasn’t a good display from Searle.
Wright leads the head to head 4-1 but their latest match will give Rydz confidence as he won 6-3 in the Gilbraltar Darts Trophy in September. Their previous televised encounter was close too but it was Wright who came out in top 10-9 back in the Players Championship Finals in 2020. Those weren’t World Championship Quarter-Finals however and I see Wright winning comfortably with the experience he has.

Prediction: Peter Wright to Win -1.5 Sets
Gerwyn Price vs Michael Smith
🏆
Quarter-Final
⏱
Match due to start at 9:15pm
The final Quarter-Final match is probably the pick of the bunch between the defending champion and favourite for this Gerwyn Price and the current third in the market Michael Smith.
‘Bully Boy’ Smith has arguably been playing the better of these two all event. At 106.92 he notched up the highest individual match average of the event when he defeated Ron Meulenkamp 3-0 in his opener.
It’s not that match that many will remember however it’s his latest game against Jonny Clayton that will live long in the memory, an absolute classic of a game that neither deserved to lose. They both went at it hammer and tongue and it was Smith who edged it 4-3, averaging 99.84. Whatever I write about that tussle just wouldn’t do it justice. The bigger question is can Smith produce the same display again against Price?
In stark contrast Price, after somehow losing the opening set to Dirk Van Duijvenbode couldn’t have won with more ease, battering his opponent leg after leg to win 4-1. It’s as comfortable as you can expect at the Last 16 stage of a Worlds.
He had more trouble coming through his previous two matches. He defeated Ritchie Edhouse 3-1 in his opener, losing the first set and looking in trouble in the third before producing some sublime finishing. He then went all the way to a last leg decider against Kim Huybrechts. He could’ve lost and some say he should’ve the way final set went but he’s been out finishing his opponents all week with twelve 100+ out shots to his name already. This could be a classic and could come down to finishing and the timing of these.
