Arminia Bielefeld v Augsburg

Of all the relegation-threatened sides in the Bundesliga this season, Arminia Bielefeld are perhaps the best equipped to fight off a late dip into the bottom two simply because of their grit and performances since the end of last year. 

Indeed, over the course of their last 10 Bundesliga games, Frank Kramer’s side have picked up an impressive 15 points and lost just three games, in comparison to the single digit return the likes of Hertha Berlin and Stuttgart have won in that time. And Friday night’s clash with Augsburg will be the perfect opportunity for Bielefeld to add to that tally. 

Of course, much of that confidence in front of their own fans will come from the fact that they’re up against an Augsburg side that remain truly hopeless on the road this season. So far in this current campaign, Markus Weinzierl’s side have picked up just seven points from 12 games. A return that only Greuther Furth have struggled to beat among the 18 teams in the German top flight this season. 

In fact, not only have Augsburg failed to win 17 of their last 18 away games in the Bundesliga, but they’ve also been losing at half time and full time in each of their last three away games and have conceded 11 goals in that time.

Bayern Munich v Bayer Leverkusen

There’s a very good chance that Bayern Munich will manage to wrestle all three points off Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, considering the fact that the Bavarians have won five of their last six clashes against their Bundesliga foes. But what’s even more likely is that this game will be full of goals. 

So far this season Julian Nagelsmann’s side have put scoring goals above all else in their quest for another league title and as a result they’ve averaged 3.13 goals per game. And without any major injuries to key forwards ahead of the match, Bayern should be confident of putting a few goals past this Leverkusen side. 

Of course, that’s not to say that Gerardo Seoane’s side are slouches. On the contrary, only Bayern and Borussia Dortmund have scored more goals than Leverkusen this season, who currently average an impressive 2.63 goals per game. 

Leverkusen will be without key striker Patrik Schick for the match, but they’ll have every confidence in Florian Wirtz and Moussa Diaby getting in behind a Bayern defence that will likely be without Manuel Neuer in goals as well as Lucas Hernandez and Alphonso Davies in defence. 

There’s no doubt that both sides will be relying on their offence to compensate for misfiring defences in this game, so we should certainly expect lots of goals.

Bochum v Greuther Furth

Bochum were considered strong favourites to be involved in the relegation battle this season but Thomas Reis’s side have overcome expectations by making sure they pick up points at home and that’s exactly what they’re likely to do when Greuther Furth come to town on Saturday. 

Indeed, Bochum have won six of their 12 home games this season and as a result have picked up 21 of their 29 points from the overall league campaign at the old Vonovia Ruhrstadion. Only three sides have managed to beat Reis’s side in front of their own fans this season and Furth are unlikely to join such an exclusive club. 

That’s largely down to the fact that Furth have truly struggled to match the expectations of the Bundesliga when they’ve travelled on the road this season. Not only have Stefan Leitl’s side managed to earn just one point from 12 away games so far in this campaign, but they’ve also conceded a massive 44 goals along the way. 

There’s no doubt that Furth have managed to regain some sort of composure since the turn of the year with two wins and three draws from seven games, but this clash remains one between one of the league’s most impressive home sides and undoubtedly the worst team on the road this season. As a result, it’s only going one way.

Hertha Berlin v Frankfurt

There’s no doubt that two desperate sides will be meeting in the German capital on Saturday when Hertha Berlin host Eintracht Frankfurt and as a result we should expect a gritty, low-scoring affair. 

Hertha remain devoid of purpose, form or indeed goals under caretaker head coach Tayfun Korkut, with just eight points won from their last 10 games and, crucially, just 10 goals in that period of time too. And in their last five games Korkut’s side  have managed to score just four goals as they stare at a losing streak that could stretch to four games on Saturday. 

Such a side should be easy pickings for Frankfurt, but the Eagles also find themselves in a desperate run of form too and there’s very little to suggest that Oliver Glasner’s side will be able to score many goals either on Saturday. 

In their last 10 league games, Frankfurt have managed just 13 goals and Glasner’s side have failed to score at all in their last three league games. Much of that can be blamed on new striker Rafael Borre, who hasn’t scored a goal in any of his last seven appearances for the club, despite a bright start to the season. 

Frankfurt could end up stealing all three points from a hapless Hertha side, but the smartest bet here is to expect very few goals from either team on the day.

RB Leipzig v Freiburg

There’s no doubt that Domenico Tedesco has got RB Leipzig back firing on all cylinders and once again looking like a team that could eventually challenge Bayern for the league title next season. As such, plucky Freiburg may find Saturday’s visit to the Red Bull Arena to be a tortuous and fruitless endeavour. 

Indeed, only Bayern have picked up more points than RB Leipzig over the course of the last 10 match days and when it comes to winning games at home the Saxony side are third in the league, with nine wins from 12. With no serious injuries except to central defender Josko Gvardiol, Tedesco’s team will have plenty of confidence for this home tie. 

And so they should when they take a look at Freiburg’s record on the road this season. Although Christian Streich’s side have built up a reputation over the years for being difficult to break down in front of their own fans, the Black Forest club have managed just two wins from their last seven games on the road and allowed the likes of Bochum, Dortmund and FC Koln to wrestle all three points off them along the way. 

Victories in their last two games would suggest that Freiburg are beginning to get back to their best, but RB Leipzig will simply have too much for them on Saturday.

Wolfsburg v Union Berlin

Wolfsburg’s improved form under new head coach Florian Kohfeldt can be put down to the team regaining their confidence in front goal, with the Wolves now sitting on two wins and a draw from their last five league games but, crucially nine goals scored along the way. 

However, Wolfsburg have had no trouble conceding goals this season, particularly at home where they’ve shipped no less than 17 in just 12 league games. And while they are scoring again, they’ve also still managed to concede seven alongside the aforementioned nine in their last five games. 

Union Berlin find themselves in a similar situation. Urs Fischer will undoubtedly be delighted that his side were able to overcome St Pauli in the German Cup in midweek, but he’ll also be aware of the fact that his team have shipped 19 goals in 12 away games this season. 

Indeed, alongside Wolfsburg’s home games tending to average 2.5 goals per game, Union’s trips on the road have so far averaged an even higher 2.83 goals per game. This match could go either way, but neither team will likely be able to hold on to a clean sheet.

Stuttgart v Monchengladbach

There’s no doubt that Saturday’s “Topspiel” between Stuttgart and Borussia Monchengladbach will be a clash between two sides desperate for all three points. However, while such games can often lead to exciting, end-to-end encounters, this will more likely be a low-scoring, cagey affair. 

Indeed, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side have struggled for goals this season, with 28 scored from 24 games and just six from their last six games – the second worst return in the German top flight. And in their last 10 games Stuttgart have averaged just 0.8 goals per match. 

Any team in the Bundesliga would be looking at such stats and be licking their lips ahead of their trip to the Mercedes-Benz Arena, but in Gladbach we have a team that have looked just as abject in front of goal. 

Indeed, from 12 away games this season Adi Hutter’s side have managed to muster just 11 goals and without influential playmaker and goalscorer Lars Stindl, it seems unlikely that the Foals will be able to take advantage of their struggling hosts on Saturday evening. 

Gladbach may yet win the game, but a smarter bet would be in expecting neither side to find the back of the net with great regularity on the day.
