Schaffhausen are making a late dash to the finish line in the Challenge League and moved into the promotion play-off spot courtesy of their 1-0 win away to Yverdon-Sport last weekend. With a match against top of the table Winterthur sandwiched between two games against those teams in the bottom three, FCS will be keen to seize the opportunity to pull away from Aarau in second.
Wil remain the most entertaining side in the league, even if they don’t have anything tangible to show for it down in eighth. It isn’t often that while sitting in the bottom half of the table, you can simultaneously be the second-highest scorers in the league, only behind league leaders Winterthur, but also have conceded the second-highest number of goals in the league, second only to bottom club SC Kriens.
The last two fixtures between these two have been enthralling and goal-laden. The most recent was a 3-2 victory for Wil at home in February and they also played out a 3-3 draw in October. As strong and free-scoring as FCS are at home, they have conceded in over half of their fixtures at the WeFox Arena, and all but three of FC Wil’s away matches have featured Over 2.5 Goals too. It is entering make-or-break territory for principality club Vaduz and their promotion hopes this season. Two wins in their last five, against the two at the bottom of the league, and two straight defeats to promotion rivals Winterthur and Schaffhausen has left them in severe danger of missing out on an automatic return to the Super League. They are seven points behind Winterthur at the top and five adrift of Schaffhausen in the play-off spot.
Scoring goals hasn’t been an issue for FCV this season, their inability to keep clean sheets has been though. In their last two defeats, they’ve scored four goals but also conceded seven and with just three clean sheets in thirty attempts so far, it is the reason why their chances of promotion are hanging by a thread.
Neuchatel Xamax have scored ten goals in their last three games and will be keen to take advantage of their opponents shaky defence on their trip to Liechtenstein. Vaduz have scored in five of their last six though and two of the three meetings this season have had both teams scoring, including a seven-goal thriller in early March. I expect they both will be on the scoresheet at the Rheinpark.

FC Zurich v FC Sion (Super League)

It was a return to winning ways for FC Zurich last weekend after they had uncharacteristically dropped points in their previous two matches, brushing aside YB with a brace from top marksman Assan Ceesay. That a run of just two consecutive games without a win can be classified as uncharacteristic for this FCZ side is a testament to the overall consistency that has them just two victories away from their first Super League title since 2009.
Sion represents the first team that the league leaders will have to beat on their quest for the title. The visitors from the Valais are firmly stuck in the bottom half of the table and while some from the region will have concerns, they are seven points clear of relegation danger and likely to retain their top division status.
The visitors did take a point from this fixture in February, but FCZ are an even stronger prospect at home and ran out 6-2 winners at the Letzigrund in October.
Sion have picked up only thirteen points on the road with only four of them coming against sides in the top four. They also have the leakiest defence of all the teams on their travels and come up against the home side that has scored the most goals. This should be a routine win for FCZ and another step towards the league title.

YB are out to avoid making unwanted history for the club when they face Servette. Last weekend, the current champions stretched their winless streak to seven, matching their previous Super League era record from 2013. Another game without the three points will take that tally to eight, a run they haven’t experienced since the old Nationalliga A days in 2002.
SFC come into this one still in the midst of an unpredictable batch of form after following up wins over sides in the top three, FCZ and YB, with losses to sides in the bottom three, Lausanne and Grasshoppers. Happily for the Genevans, they are the one team that YB have struggled to crack in their four title-winning seasons, being the only side to win in a run of fifty-five unbeaten games at the Wankdorf… something they did twice.
YB have kept only three clean sheets at home all season, have scored in all but one of those games and have also conceded two goals in their last six consecutive Super League games. SFC have just one clean sheet away from home and have scored in five out of their last six trips to Bern. YB will score at home, but against a side that has been like kryptonite to them in the last three years, their streak of conceding will also continue.
