Schaffhausen v Aarau

We are set up perfectly for a title decider at the WeFox Arena on Saturday afternoon between league leaders Schaffhausen and second-placed Aarau. The two are exactly level on points and separated only by the superior goal difference (+4) of the home side. A win for either one of these sides will almost certainly punch their ticket to the Super League next season.

Schaffhausen haven’t been in the Swiss top-flight since 2007 and, after a journey that has seen them spend time in the third-tier, they are determined to finally end that drought. They are ten games unbeaten and underlined their credentials once more with a 5-2 win away at Thun, becoming only the second side to score five goals at the Stockhorn Arena since it opened in 2011.

The visitors have won their last four games to put themselves back into contention, but it is also worth noting that these wins have come against sides in the bottom half of the table. They had won only one of their previous six prior to this run and were also beaten at home by Schaffhausen in early March.

With so much on the line, this could be a tight contest. Schaffhausen have the best home record in the league and have had Aarau’s number both home and away in the last two matches. Aarau carry plenty of threat themselves though, so I’d cover yourself here.

FC Wil v Thun

With just two games remaining, FC Wil can still finish up in seventh or down in ninth, neither of which would indicate a particularly memorable season for the club. However, it will be hard for the fans to forget this season anyway as their team took on the role of serial entertainers throughout the campaign. There can’t be many leagues in the world in which the team down in eighth has scored the third-highest number of goals while also having the second-highest total of goals conceded, but that is just the sort of season it has been for FCW.

FC Thun make the trip to the IGP Arena having adopted a similar gung-ho approach – twenty-one goals have been scored in their previous five games. While a top-half finish isn’t yet secure, Thun are unlikely to finish any higher or lower than fifth position this season. 

Over 2.5 Goals has landed in 28 of the 34 games played so far by Wil, so it is unsurprising that the value in that particular market is diminishing in the final few games. A more valuable option here is Over 1.5 Team Goals for Wil. They have scored at least two goals in sixteen of their seventeen home matches this season and are up against a Thun side that have conceded at least two goals in over half of their away matches.

Vaduz v Stade Lausanne-Ouchy

FC Vaduz kept themselves in the promotion hunt, officially at least, with their narrow 1-0 win away to bottom club SC Kriens at Kleinfeld last weekend. They remain six points behind the top two in the league and with a significant goal differential between them, it would take something remarkable for the Liechtensteiners to upset the order at this late stage. They are, however, almost certain of third place and can confirm it with victory over SLO.

Stade Lausanne-Ouchy suffered their sixth defeat in their last seven games as they lost out to a last-minute winner against Aarau at Brugglifeld. After such a strong first half of the season, SLO have begun to flame out and will be hoping they can end this sticky patch at the Rheinpark.

After three victories in a row, FCV come into this in better form. They are erratic on home soil though. With 31 goals scored in their 17 matches in the principality, I’m confident that Vaduz will find the net against an SLO outfit that hasn’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last ten matches. I also think that the visitors, who have scored in six of their last seven away fixtures, can grab a goal against a fragile Vaduz defence, just like they did at this venue back in November.

Yverdon-Sport v SC Kriens

Yverdon-les-Bains to play a Yverdon-Sport side that will be more than satisfied with safety in their return season in the Challenge League.

YS can still finish higher than the ninth position they currently occupy, and they’ll be confident of returning to winning ways against the league’s whipping boys as they look to leapfrog FC Wil and Stade Lausanne-Ouchy into seventh. Saturday’s venue, the Stade Municipal, has become a bit of a fortress for Uli Forte’s men, they’ve lost only four times at the stadium, a record that only promotion-battling Schaffhausen and Winterthur can better.

With relegation already confirmed, Kriens continue to battle on regardless, picking up two wins in recent weeks and also scoring in their last seven away fixtures in a row. Despite that, they have conceded at least two goals in sixteen of their seventeen away matches this season, and while I think Kriens will make a game of this one, I do believe Yverdon will pile on some final away day misery.
