It is hard to find a better way for golfers to prepare for the 150^th Open Championship, than to play the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. This final stop before the Open Championship is a co-sanctioned event between the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, with a field of 156 golfers from both. This is the fourth-straight year the Genesis Scottish Open has been held here.

The Renaissance Club is a 7,294-yard par 71 links-style golf course. This is a great way for players to get acclimated to links golf as part of their preparation for the Open Championship. It is a true test of all-around game as battling the weather conditions seems to be the biggest factor. The field is absolutely loaded with talent as fourteen of the top 15 players in the OWGR will be teeing it up this week, with the only exception being Rory McIlroy. Despite the big names, the long shots have done very well here.

All three winners of the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club have been DP World Tour players, with Min Woo Lee taking home the title last year. Lee gained over 4.0 strokes around the green and putting last year emphasizing how important around the green play can be on a links course with very quirky green structures. We should be giving some advantage to DP World Tour players this week as many of them played on a links course last week in Ireland and they are familiar with this links style.

This should be a great week to find a winner and get momentum before the Open Championship next week, which is only two hours north in St. Andrews. Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone with taking a long shot for the Genesis Scottish Open. History finds a way of repeating itself in this event.

Outright Betting Tips

Matthew Fitzpatrick 19/1

Fitzpatrick finally got the monkey off of his back with a US Open victory, so he won’t have to hear that he can’t win on the PGA Tour anymore. He had been lurking for a while with a fifth-place finish at the PGA Championship and a 14^th at The Masters. Not only did Fitzpatrick win three weeks ago, but he now has eight Top 10’s in his last 12 events. The number may seem steep, but Fitzpatrick has been extremely consistent all season long and now returns home to a place he obviously feels very comfortable playing.

Fitzpatrick lost on a playoff hole at the Genesis Scottish Open last year and came in 42^nd and 14^th in the two previous years. Fitzpatrick is fantastic in the wind and has gained strokes off the tee and with his approach in eight-straight events. The putter has also been scorching hot for Fitzpatrick who has gained at least five strokes in four of his last five events. If taking him for a back-to-back win isn’t your style, Fitzpatrick is 4/1 to be the Top English Player or 4.5/1 to be the top Great Britain & Ireland Player. Whichever way you want to bet Fitzpatrick, know that your money is going to a very consistent golfer.

Ryan Fox – 40/1

Seeing Ryan Fox at 40/1 may be a sticker shock in this field, but he has a Top Three finish in three of his last four events. Fox came in second last week at the Irish Open, third in the BMW International Open, and second in the Dutch Open. In fact, on the DP World Tour, Fox has finished Top 15 in eight-straight events with seven Top 10’s and five Top Three’s. It is hard to find a golfer playing as well as Fox right now. The competition has increased in this event, but Fox has been very dialed in with his overall game.

Fox is known for being a bomber who also leans on a fantastic approach game to get the job done. He has tons of links golf experience, which will bode very well in this event. Playing among the world’s best, Fox has made the cut in three-straight Open Championships and seven of his last 11 Majors. His name has come up a lot this week as he is a popular choice in the outright betting markets. He isn’t on the PGA Tour often, but Fox has the experience and talent to record another top finish at the Scottish Open.

Hao-Tong Li – 80/1

Another player coming off a victory in his last event is Hao-Tong Li. He now has three DP World Tour victories with his BMW International Open title two weeks ago. Li’s game is rapidly ramping into form as he is also known for being a big-game hunter. He finished 17^th in the PGA Championship in 2020, 16^th in the US Open in 2018, and 3^rd in The Open in 2017. A now household name on the DP World Tour, Li gets another shot at the PGA Tour players this week. He has performed well in these events in the past.

Seeing Li at 81/1 feels like a steal given how well he is playing recently. There were a few other golfers that caught my eye in the 50’s and 60’s, but Li takes the cake coming in at this price tag. He essentially went wire-to-wire in his victory two weeks ago as he dominated a course that had a number of birdie opportunities. Li recorded 21 birdies and four eagles on the week to dueled Thomas Pieters down the stretch. Another victory in this field will be tough, but he is at least worth a sprinkle at this high price.

Make The Cut Betting Tips

Adrian Meronk – 1.44/1

Following his victory at the Irish Open last week, Meronk has climbed to seventh in the DP World rankings as he has a Top Three finish in four of his last seven events. With the victory, Meronk became the first-ever player from Poland to win on the DP World Tour. He has made 12/14 cuts this season and is heating up at just the right time. In the outright betting markets, Meronk is 67/1 which is worth a small gamble if you think he has a chance to go back-to-back, but I will stick with him making the cut.

Mito Pereira – 1.5/1

Making the cut hasn’t been too much of an issue for Pereira, but contending has. Pereira has made the cut in 17/23 events this season, but has only two Top 10’s with his best finish being third in the PGA Championship back in May. Despite back-to-back missed cuts, Pereira has gained strokes off the tee in 11-straight events as he is also known for playing very well in the wind. Don’t expect a high finish out of Pereira, but he has shown time and time again that he is capable of making the cut with his talent.

Lucas Herbert – 1.53/1

After a ninth-place finish in the Irish Open last week, Herbert looks to continue playing well in the Scottish Open this week. Playing at The Renaissance Club has come easy for Herbert who is another stellar wind player. 13 golfers have played here all three years since 2019, and all 13 have made the cut in all of them. Herbert has performed the best, coming in fourth each of the last two years, and is the only one of the 13 with multiple Top 10’s. Similar to Fox, Herbert is 41/1 in the outright betting markets.
