Arguably one of the greatest weeks of the year with the 2022 British Open Championship at the Old Course at St. Andrews Golf Club. This will be the historic 150^th year of this event and the 30^th that will be hosted at the Old Course. There truly is no better place for this Open Championship. The Old Course first hosted The Open in 1873 as the layout remains very similar to the classic footage from their first event.

The Open Championship will also be the last Major of the 2022 season. There is also a chance that this could be one of the last time all PGA Tour and LIV Tour golfers will play together with the status of Major’s moving forward being in flux for those on the LIV Tour. With so much talent in this field, it is important to not be over exposed on your betting card. We’ll find the best golfer fit for this week.

Despite the difficult conditions in Open Championships, the last four winners at St. Andrews averaged a score of -16 under par. The wind remains the key to this entire event. If the wind stays down, scoring opportunities will be plentiful. If the winds start swirling, a single-digit score could be hoisting the Claret Jug on Sunday. Another unique feature is only 350 yards have been added to this course since 1873.

The Old Course is a par 72, playing just over 7,300 yards. It is designed with a completely exposed layout and nothing to protect the course from the coastal winds from St. Andrews Bay. One unique wrinkle to The Open is it is the only tournament of the year which forces each golfer to start on the first hole. There are no split tees. Therefore, the rounds will be long which may make some tee times very difficult if the wind picks up. Let’s find ourselves a winner and a few cut makers to make this an enjoyable week!

Outright Betting Tips

Jordan Spieth 14/1

Looking at the top of the board, Jordan Spieth with his history at The Open stands out the most. In eight Open appearances, Spieth has never missed a cut. He won in 2017 becoming the Champion Golfer of the Year, good for his third win that season. In his past six starts in this event, Spieth posted a win, a runner-up, four top-10’s, and six top-30’s.  Something about Spieth and The Open jives together perfectly. Even when his game was out of sorts, Spieth’s creativity around these greens is a huge advantage on the field.

Spieth had a top-10 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open last week as he got warmed up for the last Major of the season. With disappointing scores at The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Players where his best finish was T34, Spieth will find comfort where very few do at St. Andrews. Spieth has been dialed in from tee-to-green and around the green per usual, but his putter has let him down this season as he ranks 145^th on the PGA Tour. Even with his putting woes, his history at The Open is immaculate. This is an event where course history and knowledge is very important so ride that wave.

Louis Oosthuizen– 33/1

A LIV Tour player that really stood out at his number is Louis Oosthuizen. Similar to Spieth, something about St. Andrews gets the juices flowing for Oosthuizen. He has a victory and a second-place playoff loss in his two most recent trips to the Old Course. That course history should bode well for a player who is finally starting to find his groove since leaving the PGA Tour. In his last four events, Oosthuizen has three top-10’s, but did struggle at the U.S. Open. This event is much more in his wheelhouse though.

With his game trending upward, Oosthuizen should really be able to compete at St. Andrews. Leaving the PGA Tour may have rejuvenated his game. His injury also could have been the problem. Regardless, Oosthuizen is clicking on all cylinders right now, even with his top-10 finishes coming against lesser competition. Could he finally get back over the hump with his second Major victory in his career? After all, Oosthuizen has finished runner-up in every Major. He will compete and be involved in the end and that’s all you can ask for at a player at this number. Don’t sleep on the South African at St. Andrews.

Adam Scott – 66/1

We don’t get to see Adam Scott much anymore, but when we do it is always a treat. He has played in only five tournaments since The Players on March 10^th. Every time Scott takes the tee box, he is a threat to win regardless of where he is playing. His best finish was a T4 at The Genesis Invitational in February although he also had a T14 at the U.S. Open less than a month ago. Even at the age of 41, Scott is a big game hunter. Seeing his price tag this high is an auto bet given the talent that he provides each event.

Scott has a very solid track record not only at St. Andrews, but also at The Open. He has made the cut at The Open in 15 of his last 17 trips including five Top-10’s and three Top-5’s. Scott has made the cut and improved his finish in each of his last three trips to St. Andrews with his best finish being a T10 in 2015. Don’t let his lack of playing keep you from getting exposure to Scott this week. The experience he has around this track is enough to give confidence at this number. Expect another great showing from Scott.

Make The Cut Betting Tips

Viktor Hovland – 4/9

To no surprise playing at a course that requires precision around the greens is going to give Viktor Hovland trouble. He ranks 204^th on the PGA Tour around the green. However, 1.44/1?! That is way too much value for this young stud. Hovland has missed back-to-back cuts at the U.S. Open and Genesis Scottish Open, but he has made the cut in 16 of his previous 17 events. In his lone Open Championship experience in 2021, Hovland finished T12 finishing with a final round of 66. For a player who ranks in the Top-10 in approach, I’ll easily take this value on Hovland making the cut in his first round at St. Andrews.

Bryson DeChambeau – 8/15

There is too much talent in the bag of Bryson DeChambeau to have this large of a price tag to make the cut at The Open. He has yet to play at St. Andrews, but has made the cut in two of his last four Open Championships. His injury earlier this season has forced Dechambeau to take a lot of time off. He has only played in a few tournaments since January and one was a LIV event just a few weeks ago where he recorded a Top-10. We are potentially getting a fully healthy DeChambeau at a place where the fairways are extremely wide, making up for his wayward misses. The price is too long for such a talented golfer.

Tiger Woods – 1/2

This feels too easy, doesn’t it? If Tiger Woods is playing in a golf tournament, he thinks he can win. After a gruesome third round at the PGA Championship shooting 79, Woods withdrew. He made the cut at The Masters and finished T47. Those two tournaments Woods played in were the only two in this season and he made the cut in both. Even if he is not 100% healthy, the knowledge that he has around St. Andrews is enough in itself to make this cut. This will be Woods’ sixth tournament at the Old Course. He has missed the cut once and has two wins. Woods has made 18 of 21 cuts at The Open in his career.
