Schaffhausen v FC Wil
🏟
Friday 5th August – 6:30PM KO
Schaffhausen and FC Wil were two sides at opposite ends of the Challenge League table last season, but after three games in the new campaign, they have identical win/loss records and sit side-by-side in fourth and fifth respectively. Both teams will be pretty content with how they’ve started, even if there is a long way to go.
The similarities don’t end there. FCS made it two wins from their opening three games after their comfortable 2-0 victory over Neuchatel Xamax at the WeFox Arena while their visitors on Friday, FC Wil, won by the same scoreline in their match at the Lidl Arena against Vaduz to score their second win from three games too.
Schaffhausen are slight favourites given their home advantage and they should trouble an FC Wil that conceded forty-eight goals on the road last season and began their travels with a 2-1 loss at SLO. FC Wil score plenty of goals, and I think they’ll be able to breach the Schaffhausen defence. There were also twenty goals in the four meetings in 21/22 so this could be another entertaining contest.

Neuchatel Xamax v Yverdon-Sport
🏟
Friday 5th August – 7:15PM KO
Neuchatel Xamax were left digesting another defeat last weekend that has left them rooted to the bottom of the Challenge League table after three matches. They are the only team in Switzerland’s top two leagues that has yet to pick up a point and, although it is early days, there are serious alarm bells ringing at the Stade de la Maladiere.
Their 2-0 defeat at Schaffhausen followed on from losses home and away to Aarau and FC Wil. Much like their previous matches, Xamax created chances but lacked the ruthlessness to punish Schaffhausen and were well beaten over the ninety minutes.
Yverdon-Sport continue to surprise with their hot start to the campaign. A team that only scored 44 goals last season, only relegated SC Kriens scored less, are already top scorers in the division with eight goals in their first three matches. They are also the only unbeaten side left in the league after they won 3-1 at Thun last time out.
YS are scoring goals for fun at the moment and while they haven’t performed as well away from the Stade Municipal recently, they can take something against a Xamax team that lacks the clinical edge to win this match.

Thun v Aarau
🏟
Friday 5th August – 7:15PM KO
FC Thun have been unfortunate not to have picked up more than a solitary point so far. They deserved something from their opener at Schaffhausen and threw away the win against Bellinzona with the concession of a last-minute penalty. That being said, their loss last Friday evening against Yverdon was much more convincing and better is required from a club that has ambitions of challenging for the title and a Super League return.
The visiting side, FC Aarau, will be keen to get themselves back on track after their narrow loss at Brugglifeld to Lausanne. They have opened their campaign with a draw, a win and now a defeat, but they’ll be encouraged overall, especially with the performances of new signing Shkelqim Vladi who has scored three goals in three games since his summer move from Young Boys.
FCT haven’t been at the level they’d have hoped for, but they are strong at home and should fancy their chances of scoring against an Aarau side that has yet to keep a clean sheet. Aarau were the top scorers away from home last season and they have found the net in all three of their fixtures so far. I expect a close game with goals for both teams.
