Cambridge United v Burton Albion
🏟
Saturday 27th August – 3:00PM KO
Cambridge United are building on their impressive 14th placed finish last season under the excellent stewardship of Mark Bonner and another comfortable season of consolidation appears to be on the cards. The U’s produced an excellent second half performance to come from behind and take a 1-1 draw at Charlton Athletic last weekend, with precocious talent Harvey Knibbs finding the net.
Jubril Okedina and Greg Taylor remain a doubt, which would leave them light at the back but there are also fitness concerns with the visitors. Centre back Conor Shaughnessy is out for at least six months leaving a hole in the Burton Albion, the Brewers were much-improved against Ipswich Town but came straight back down to reality in a disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Port Vale last time out.
Having picked up just one point from five games so far, conceding 14 goals in the process, the Brewers will see a draw as a positive result but the U’s should be able to establish control with the impressive duo of Paul Digby and Adam May in a midfield double-pivot, with Liam O’Neil adding competition for places.

Derby County v Peterborough United
🏟
Saturday 27th August – 3:00PM KO
Derby County are being priced up due to the size of the club still and have no right to be odds on favourites against a Peterborough United side who have hit the ground running since suffering relegation along with the Rams. Derby’s process is solid so far under Liam Rosenior, and should see them compete in and around the top six, but the Posh forward line is irresistible at the moment.
James Chester and Curtis Davies are still missing in the backline, which makes the challenge of containing the likes of Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jack Marriott tricky, not to mention creative force Joe Ward from out wide. The trio are more than capable of playing above third tier level, and the front two in particular would not be out of place towards the top half of the second tier when fully fit.
Though currently possessing a 100% record at Pride Park, Derby County will have their work cut out with their new visiting opponents. Even after a handful of matches, there is clear evidence that Peterborough United are a serious attacking force. Grant McCann’s self-proclaimed ‘best strikers in the league’, Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jack Marriott, have scored eight of Posh’s 12 league goals so far and each bagged a brace in last weekend’s 4-0 demolition of Lincoln City. The pair benefit greatly from the supporting cast behind them that includes Jack Taylor, Jeando Fuchs and Ben Thompson as a midfield trio, with Harrison Burrows and Joe Ward excelling as dynamic wing-backs, the latter in particular. Additional firepower can be provided from the bench through Ricky Jade-Jones, David Ajiboye, Joel Randell and Kwame Poku.
A near-full crowd is hoped for at Pride Park as Derby County fans know the challenge that stands in front of their team. Whilst the Rams have made a strong start to the season on home soil, opponents Peterborough are showing themselves to be one of if the strongest side in League One. Defeat at Plymouth Argyle is the only blip on a strong start to the league campaign, and the attacking ability in this Posh side will cause a stern test for every opponent they face. Derby fans will be keen to see Jack Marriott kept quiet, but the problem then comes with holding back his strike partner and the many talented players that are in support.

Lincoln City v Fleetwood Town
🏟
Saturday 27th August – 3:00PM KO
Lincoln are surprisingly close to evens to take the win against a Fleetwood Town side who have started in more promising fashion in their respective transition. It is a battle of the rookie managers with Mark Kennedy taking on Scott Brown, it is too early to judge either but considering the way they finished last term, the latter has walked into the tougher job.
The Cod Army will arrive at Sincil Bank on the back of two straight goalless draws, chance creation has been an issue but they have the quality to come back into the side as the season progresses to address that. It is tough to justify the Imps’ outright price averaging just 0.67 xGF in League One, and conceding 1.35 xGA per game is a very worrying process. Fleetwood are better creatively than that, despite both sides having scored four in five so far, and will have built some confidence in their backline with recent shut-outs.
After picking Fleetwood to finish rock bottom it feels odd to be getting them onside, but Lincoln are far too short and therefore presents value on the visitors.

Wycombe Wanderers v Charlton Athletic
🏟
Saturday 27th August – 3:00PM KO
Charlton Athletic have been a very exciting follow so far under Ben Garner, creating chances equating to 1.94 xGF per game, while allowing 1.63 xGA on average. They are sure to be involved in some high scoring matches this term, and a both teams to score bet has copped in three of five so far in the league. One of those exceptions was 1-0 home win over Derby County where they allowed 1.97 xGA.
The Addicks will be relieved that the injury that meant Corey Blackett-Taylor had to come off shortly after being brought on last weekend against Cambridge is nothing serious, with Mandela Egbo, Chuks Aneke, Conor McGrandles and Steven Sessegnon all unavailable this weekend.
There is no Sam Vokes for Wycombe Wanderers, but in David Wheeler, Garath McCleary and Anis Mehmeti the Chairboys pose a potent threat and are typically very strong at Adams Park. Wanderers did the double over the Addicks last season and will be content allowing the Addicks to have the lion’s share of possession despite being at home.
Wycombe are rightful favourites, bouncing back from a poor run with a 3-0 win at Barnsley last time out, but while both teams to score is still backable with Charlton I am happy to take it.
