Jong Ajax v Heracles Almelo
🏟
Monday 5th September – 7:00PM KO
Jong Ajax lost captain Naci Unuvar last week, as he went on loan to Trabzonspor, but this week has also been positive for the quality in John Heitinga’s team. The first team managed to keep hold of Edson Álvarez and Mo Kudus and that means that several fringe players like Kian Fitz-Jim and Youri Regeer see their chances on first team football diminish. Not good for them, but positive for the strength of Jong Ajax.
What doesn’t help Jong Ajax is that the first team are playing their first Champions League match on Wednesday. That means that fringe players in the first team like Lorenzo Lucca and Francisco Conceicao, who sometimes get chances with the academy side, will now surely be part of the squad for the first Champions League match against Rangers.
The away side were relegated after 17 years in the top flight and are a strong contender to return in one year, so it is a big game for both sides. The season start has been convincing, although they did drop their first points last week. Players like Emil Hansson, Samuel Armenteros and Anas Ouahim are quality players for a second division side and throughout the entire side they have a lot of top division experience and that shows. With Jong Ajax most likely playing far from their strongest possible XI, I suspect Heracles will pick up the three points.

Jong AZ v FC Dordrecht
🏟
Monday 5th September – 7:00PM KO
Just like Ajax, AZ’s first team are playing continental football this week, in the Conference League. The AZ match won’t be until Thursday, so it probably won’t have a big effect on this game. There are, however, two exceptions to that. Talented centre back Maxim Dekker played 90 minutes with the first team on Saturday and will surely miss this game to be fit for the Conference League match in Poland and his partner in crime in the centre of defence, Wouter Goes, will also miss this game. Goes was sent off last game and is suspended for this game against Dordrecht.
Whether first team fringe midfielders like Peer Koopmeiners, Zico Buurmeester and Fedde de Jong will feature in this game isn’t entirely clear, but the expectation is that they will be available and that bids well for the chance on goals. Like almost every year, FC Dordrecht are one of the weakest teams in the league. They did pick up four points from the last two games, but aren’t expected to fly high in this Eerste Divisie season. With Stijn Meijer Dordrecht lost one of its best players to PEC Zwolle, but the striker had so far been out injured this season, so it doesn’t change too much for the current situation.
The Jong AZ midfielders are responsible for most of the goals, but the fact that the centre of defence will be completely different from the usual pair, makes them vulnerable at the back. That’s why I suspect there will be goals on both ends.
