2023 PGA Championship Betting Preview: Can Jon Rahm be stopped?
The second major of the year takes place at Oak Hill Country Club this week and Jon Rahm is one of the men to beat in the PGA Championship odds. The world number one stormed to victory at the Masters last month and is 9.00 to land back-to-back majors. Rahm is joined by Scottie Scheffler at the top end of the betting, with the American expected to contend in New York. Scheffler’s putter has been cold this year though and the two market leaders can be taken on with several alternatives at bigger prices.
Power off the tee will be crucial this week with the 7,394-yard par 70 course playing into the hands of the big hitters. Certainly something to factor in when making your PGA Championship picks. Cool temperatures, breezy conditions, and rain will only lengthen the challenge and it will be a shock if the champion lacks punch off the tee.
Xander Schauffele to win outright
Sky Bet Odds: 17.0 (8 Places E/W)
Xander Schauffele looks primed to contend this week at Oak Hill and is backed to land his maiden major at 17.00 in the PGA Championship odds. Schauffele has been in hot form in recent months and is ready to peak. The American won three times last year and another victory is on the cards with his current form. Schauffele has reeled off five successive top 10s, with no worse than tied fourth in his last three tournaments. Second place at the Wells Fargo Championship, in his latest start, was another strong pointer and he ranks fifth this season for strokes gained on approach and seventh for tee to green. His ten major top 10s include two top-six finishes in US Opens held in New York. This looks like Schauffele’s time and the major specialist can make his breakthrough at Oak Hill.
Tony Finau to win outright
Sky Bet Odds: 21.0 (8 Places E/W)
Tony Finau has developed into a winning machine over the last year and the popular American is a likely contender this weekend. Finau’s talent was never questioned but his ability to get over the line made him a risky betting proposition. Now Finau has proved himself a confident closer of tournaments, holding off Rahm to win the Mexico Open at the end of April. Finau has won four of his last 20 tournaments dating back to last July and heads into the PGA Championship with more confidence than he ever has in a major. His outstanding long game, ranking first for strokes gained on approach and third from tee to green, looks tailor-made for Oak Hill. Fourth in the 2020 PGA, Finau looks well placed to improve on this and should be a factor at 21.00.
Wyndham Clark to win outright
Sky Bet Odds: 67.0 (8 Places E/W)
Wyndham Clark could upset the PGA Championship odds, with one of the form horses on the PGA Tour capable of challenging at a big price. Clark comes in this week fresh off his first title, after a stunning victory at Quail Hollow. Holding off the challenge of Schauffele, Clark shot 19-under-par in one of the most impressive wins of the season. The 29-year-old has posted five top 10s this year and his last seven outings have all resulted in top 30s. Clark has the power off the tee, sitting ninth for driving distance, and is tenth on tour for birdie average. With his recent win in the bank, Clark can ride this momentum and confidence in New York to contend at a generous price.
Adam Scott top 10 finish
Sky Bet Odds: 7.0
Adam Scott has shown encouraging signs in recent weeks and the experienced Australian merits his place in our PGA Championship tips in the top 10 market. Scott has found confidence with the putter over the last month and this is a dangerous combination alongside his long-game class. A tie for fifth at Quail Hollow was followed by eighth on Sunday at the Byron Nelson. Scott, who is 30-under-par for his last eight rounds, was fifth at Oak Hill in 2013 and is fancied to feature again on the leaderboard.
Patrick Reed top 10 finish
Sky Bet Odds: 7.50
Patrick Reed often shows up in the biggest events and the LIV golfer is another tempting top 10 wager. Reed won the Masters in 2018 and starred again at Augusta National last month, taking fourth place. His record in New York is also eye-catching and includes a victory at Bethpage Black. After a recent scouting mission to Oak Hill, Reed should be ready to go and another major top 10 is within his sights.
Justin Rose top 20 finish
Sky Bet Odds: 3.50
Justin Rose has enjoyed a resurgence this season and the former US Open champion is fancied to record a top 20 this week in New York. Rose returned to the winner’s circle with victory at Pebble Beach in February. The English golfer has since added sixth at the Players Championship and a tie for 16th at the Masters. With top 20s in the last three PGA Championships, Rose is a confident selection to continue this run.
Harris English top 40 finish
Sky Bet Odds: 2.75
Harris English should not be discounted as an outsider this week and a top 40 bet stands out at 7-4. English warmed up for Oak Hill with an excellent showing at Quail Hollow, recording a top-three finish. His major record is underrated, with third place at the US Open in 2021 and fourth at the 2020 major held at Winged Foot – a course likened to the test facing the field this week.
Sky Bet ‘Pick Your Places’
Sky Bet are putting greater control in the bettor’s hands with their Pick Your Places offer in the pre-tournament PGA Championship odds. Bettors on the tournament outright market can decide on the each-way terms that best suits them, they are the first eight, first ten, and first 12 places, with prices adjusted accordingly.
