Scotland v Japan Match Preview
Scotland head into this friendly having secured their place at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, clinching top spot in Group C with a 4-2 win over Denmark in November - finishing two points above the Danes and six clear of Greece.
It was a qualifying campaign that defied some expectations, with Steve Clarke's side - not historically prolific - finding the net multiple times in five of their six qualifiers. Their last four matches have all featured goals at both ends and more than 2.5 goals in total, suggesting a more open and free-scoring Scotland than in recent years. Scott McTominay was a key figure in the run-in, scoring in two of the final three games including a memorable overhead kick in the Denmark decider.
Japan are seasoned World Cup participants, having qualified for each of the last eight tournaments. The Samurai Blue topped their AFC qualifying group, finishing four points clear of Australia, and lost just one of their 10 matches along the way. Seven of those 10 ended in victory, with six of those wins accompanied by a clean sheet. Hajime Moriyasu's side also produced a notable result in a friendly last October, coming from two goals down to beat Brazil 3-2, before following that up with wins over Ghana and Bolivia.
Both sides are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1. Clarke will be without Ben Doak, Lawrence Shankland, Aaron Hickey and Craig Gordon through injury, while Findlay Curtis - who has impressed on loan at Kilmarnock from Rangers - could earn his senior debut. Japan are without Takehiro Tomiyasu, though Celtic pair Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate could both feature, alongside Premier League trio Ao Tanaka, Daichi Kamada and Kaoru Mitoma.
