- Leicester v Wigan
- Today
Wigan have really struggled this season, particularly on the road where they have only registered one point from their six away games.
Across the entire season, they have scored just eight goals, averaging just 0.7 per game, whilst also struggling with a very thin squad, having to rely on younger, inexperienced players to make up numbers, resulting in them having one of the youngest average ages in the whole division with 23.0. What hasn’t helped them is the amount of suspensions they have received, with Charlie Gray and Fraser Murray set to miss this one for that exact reason.
Despite a similar rocky start to League One, Leicester are by far the better of the two sides here, and have shown glimpses of quality in Russell Martin’s system. Although they sit in mid table, their underlying attacking metrics suggest they could be higher.
They have the 5th highest xG, and register the 6th most touches in an opposition box of any team in League One. When you compare that to Wigan who sit bottom, not only in the table, but for goals scored, I’m struggling to see Leicester having any problems here.
- Barnet v York
- Today
These have been two of the top performing sides in League Two in the early stages of the season, setting up an entertaining clash with Barnet sitting in an automatic promotion spot, and York not far behind the playoffs.
Barnet have seen BTTS in each of their last four matches ahead of this one, losing just one of these games. They’ve only managed to win half of their home games in League Two this term, notably conceding nine goals across their six matches but scoring 12 (2.0 per game).
York have seen BTTS in three of their last five matches, avoiding defeat in all of these games. They are yet to win away from home in League Two this term, but have scored in four of their five away assignments.
These two faced off in the National League last year, with Barnet coming away 3-1 winners on that occasion. Both have started the season well, and have enough to get on the scoresheet.
This is going to be a really interesting game, especially after the news that Sheffield Wednesday have parted ways with manager Henrik Pedersen, coming after back-to-back 2-0 defeats on the road.
They have been a lot better in front of goal when playing at home though, with them winning by five goals on two separate occasions already this season. They are currently averaging 1.8 goals scored per game, whilst conceding 1.1 across their 12 league games, so their averages for a BTTS game are strong.
They also have an xG conceded of 15.97, from their 12 goals conceded, which suggests that they are overperforming defensively, but Cambridge are a team that can punish you when given the opportunity. They are averaging 1.7 goals scored per game this season, scoring 20 goals from an xG of 15.31, which shows they are very clinical in front of goal.
Cambridge have seen both teams score in 12 of their 13 league games this season, with this landing in each of their five away games, which does make the 1.61 price very appealing for me. Wednesday possess the quality in attack to cause Cambridge problems here, and with Cambridge’s strong scoring record, especially on the road, I would’ve expected this price to be lower.
- MK Dons v Bromley
- Today
It’s no secret that Bromley have struggled to adapt to life in League One. Being winless in four and sitting in the relegation zone has seen long-term manager Andy Woodman have a shock exit from the club this week.
At the club for five seasons, Woodman led Bromley to two promotions, and his mutual departure will have caused a big stir at the club, which I think will only negatively impact the players. It has caused a rift amongst the fanbase for the Chairman, with his decision seeming to disregard the incredible job that Woodman did, which could cause a very toxic away end here.
That said, they have really struggled this season, winless on the road since their opening day victory at Barnsley and also sit bottom for a large amount of attacking metrics. They currently have had the least touches in opposition boxes, least shots taken and have the lowest xG across the whole division, and I fear this could continue.
MK Dons on the other hand, have shown glimpses of quality this season, with their impressive performances against Luton and Stevenage rewarding them with three points. They are in need of a run of wins here, with boss Paul Warne under pressure, so will be looking at this weakened Bromley side as a great opportunity to do so.
MK Dons also beat Bromley here when the two were fighting for the League Two title, despite going down to 10 men, so will be feeling confident. In that game, Bromley looked to struggle on the wide pitch at Stadium MK, and with Warne’s side still operating in a wing-back system, they will be looking to stretch the pitch again and exploit this Bromley side.
Given the context of Bromley’s struggles, combined with the playstyle differences, I think 1.61 for an MK Dons win is slightly overpriced. I feel a fairer price would be closer to the 1.50 mark, which means there is value in backing an MK Dons victory tonight.
