Mechelen won an important match over the weekend against direct rivals KV Oostende, giving them some breathing room from the relegation zone. This was the visitors first league win since October 22nd! Under new coach Defour, they are still unbeaten at home and this win gives them some breathing space in the standings. That is a welcome treat as the tricky away trip to Standard awaits on Tuesday.

Mechelen played frenetic football but still managed to secure the victory against a ten-man Ostend. That now puts them in thirteenth place, five points above the relegation zone. There was also hopeful news from the board level, as the search for a new investor has ended. Dutchman Philippe van Esch, who was previously a minority shareholder, will now become the main shareholder. This will involve a capital injection that will also give the club room to make some much-needed transfers. A strong striker and an extra defender are particularly welcome.

Standard started 2023 with two draws in the league. Against two defending teams, STVV and Seraing, they finished 1-1 each time. Now, however, the Rouches host a team that likes to play offensive football. Mechelen’s strong midfield will now play slightly more liberated football than in the previous weeks. Standard’s sluggish defence have been warned. Up front, however, Standard have enough class present to make the difference. Zinckernagel and Dragus can form a lethal duo, although that is not yet coming out enough on the pitch. With both teams’ fanatical supporters, this is likely to be a great game of football. We expect both teams to play with open sights and with that comes goals.
