Marcus Thuram to Score Anytime

Thuram has been in flying form this season, already topping the goalscorer charts in both the Champions League and Serie A with five to his name across the two competitions. He’s averaging around 0.5 xG per game and will continue to benefit from Inter’s tactical shift.

Both of his goals against Ajax came from corners, which reflects Inter’s increasing dependence, something which should benefit Thuram, whose aerial ability has drastically improved over the last few seasons.

Additionally, Francesco Pio Esposito coming into the team should aid him, given the youngster’s excellent hold-up play and chance-creation.

Cagliari (+2) Handicap

To put it plainly, I’m still yet to be won over by Cristian Chivu, and Inter’s lack of open play chance-creation is a concern of mine. Ultimately, their quality is likely to prevail, but I don’t see there being much daylight between them and their opponents.

The Nerazzurri have averaged just 1.02 xG per 90 from open play this season, yet have managed 13 goals in just five games. I simply don’t think this is sustainable, and given Cagliari's record this season, this could be a close call.

Cagliari have conceded just three goals in the league this season, with this line landing in all five of their matches across all competitions. The only defeat they’ve suffered this season came against Napoli, who relied on a 95th-minute winner; meanwhile, they’re now on a three-game winning streak.

While I expect Inter to find the net, and Thuram is the most likely to do so, Cagliari should make a game of this. This leg lands if they lose by one goal, draw or win the game.

With Inter increasingly reliant on set pieces and finding it tougher to break teams down from open play, this has the makings of a tight contest. Even so, the quality of Thuram and Esposito upfront should be enough to tilt the balance in their favour.

  • Inter have averaged 2.6 goals per game despite creating just 1.02 open play xG per 90.

  • Inter are unbeaten in 16 against Cagliari and have claimed all three points in seven of the last eight meetings between these sides.

  • Cagliari have conceded only three goals in the league, and are on a three-game winning streak across all competitions.

🔴 Compact and Disciplined Cagliari Fare Well Early On

Cagliari have kicked off their campaign in style, picking up seven points from their opening four games, despite a tough couple of matches.

The Rossoblù opened their account with a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina - a game in which chances came at a premium, and the scoreline fairly reflected a tight stalemate played out on the pitch.

Following that, Cagliari suffered their first (and last) loss of the season, having dug deep for 90 minutes to shut Napoli out, only for the reigning champions to find a way through in the 95th minute to win 1-0.

Since then, it’s three wins from three for Fabio Pisacane’s men, who have dispatched Parma, Lecce, and Frosinone most recently in the Coppa Italia.

With just three goals conceded in the league, Cagliari have been tough to break down; however, they’ve only hit back with five, which suggests that if they get their way, they could make this a cagey affair.

🔵 Nerazzurri Struggling to Find Their Rhythm

It’s been a mixed bag for Inter, who actually sit below Cagliari in Serie A, languishing in 10th position with just six points to their name.

Having suffered consecutive losses at the hands of Juventus and Udinese, the Nerazzurri have launched a minor bounce-back, and victories against Ajax and Sassuolo should inspire some confidence, amid a turbulent start for Chivu.

Notably, the one switch he’s made over the last two games has seen the introduction of Italy prodigy - Francesco Pio Esposito.

The youngster has combined his 6ft 3in stature with impressive technical ability and a relentless work rate.

He offers something very different to this Inter side, and I can see him quickly racking up the goal contributions; in fact, he was unlucky not to do so with a stunning overhead kick last time out against Sassuolo.

📊 Cagliari v Inter Milan H2H

You’d have to go as far back as 2019 to find the last time Cagliari triumphed in this fixture, which Inter have typically dominated in recent times. The Nerazurri have recorded seven wins out of the previous eight showings, and are unbeaten in 16.

16 of the last 20 meetings have produced over 2.5 goals - an impressive run in a market which would be more attractive if it weren’t for Inter’s managerial change, but one which remains a good option.

Similarly, the bookies’ odds suggest an implied probability of 30% on Inter to win and BTTS, but in actual fact, that bet has landed in two of the last five, four of the previous 10, and boasts a win rate of 44% over the last 16.
