Mateta is a man in form. His goal against Liverpool in the Community Shield added to the three goals he scored for Palace during pre-season as he looks for his third consecutive double digit haul in the English top flight.

Mateta had three shots in Crystal Palace’s triumph against Arne Slot’s champions in the Community Shield and can carry that shot volume into Palace’s opening game of the season against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Mateta will be key for Palace in this clash, Chelsea are without Levi Colwill for the majority of the season as the young centre back has picked up an ACL injury. This will definitely affect Chelsea’s defence, Colwill is Chelsea’s best centre back and is also key for how they like to build up.

Only Southampton made more errors leading to shots in the Premier League last season than Chelsea (51-45), and with Colwill sidelined it’s possible that we see Chelsea top this ranking this season as there will be more inconsistencies in their build up without the composure of Colwill. This should aid Mateta who had 70 shots across his 33 Premier League starts last season (2.37 per 90).

Another angle worth considering with Mateta is his physicality against the Chelsea backline. He caused Van Dijk and Konate all sorts of problems and the same could occur here with the potential replacements for Colwill yet to convince Maresca that they can perform consistently. Mateta won three fouls in this fixture last season so it’s worth keeping an eye on Chelsea centre back fouls as well as Mateta shots here.

Mateta had three shots in the most recent head to head meeting between the sides at Selhurst Park back in January and can carry his off season form in this game with the Eagles looking to make the most of the early issues that Chelsea could face at the back this term.

There is real value in this selection when backing with Bet365, Mateta is priced as low as 1.4 for 2+ shots on other comparable bookmakers.
