📈 Sunderland v Chelsea Form & Tactics

Both of these sides have a chance to qualify for Europe after Aston Villa thrashed Freiburg in the Europa League final, extending the European spots in the Premier League further down the table. This will be particularly exciting for Sunderland, who can qualify for Europe with a win here, if other results go their way - this would be some achievement for a newly promoted side that many fancied to face the drop.

Chelsea can also still qualify for Europe, though it’s likely that the Blues look to avoid being in the Conference League again, as you’d expect this would serve as more of a hindrance to incoming boss Xabi Alonso, who may actually benefit from some extra time on the training ground with this squad if they fail to qualify for Europe altogether. Europa League qualification is still possible, though they would need both Brighton and Brentford to slip up on the final day.

Chelsea won their first game in seven Premier League games with victory over Tottenham last time out, their season has unravelled quite dramatically - stemming from the tail end of Liam Rosenior’s reign, in which he clearly lost the dressing room. They got beat by Sunderland 2-1 earlier in the season, in fact, Chelsea have failed to beat any of the newly promoted sides at home this season.

Sunderland’s home record has been the main reason for their impressive season, with Regis Le Bris’ side losing just four of their 18 home games this term - they’ve actually picked up four more points at home than Chelsea have in the Premier League this campaign.

📔 Sunderland v Chelsea Formation & Team News

Sunderland should set up in a similar fashion to their 3-1 win over Everton last time out, and their general approach to games hasn’t changed too much throughout the campaign. Regis Le Bris sets up his side to be hard to beat and gives them an outlet, through Brian Brobbey, to aim for, which allows the Black Cats to relieve pressure.

Sunderland will be without Dan Ballard, who is suspended for this game, as well as Bertrand Traore, who has been missing for a few weeks. Trai Hume may continue in a slightly more advanced role, which has proved effective for Sunderland, especially for his work rate off the ball, which allows Sunderland to keep the opposition at arm's length from Robin Roefs, who has been one of the most impressive keepers in the top-flight.

Chelsea are likely to continue in a 4-2-3-1 shape under Calum McFarlane. McFarlane has done his best with what he’s got, but it’s clear that his tactical vision is quite limited, a lot of his ideas appear to mirror those of Enzo Maresca, with players feeling more comfortable in those patterns than they did under Liam Rosenior.

Chelsea are expected to be without Joao Pedro, Estevao and Jamie Gittens for this encounter. The latter duo have been missing for a few months, while Joao Pedro’s injury is more recent, and he may recover in time to at least feature on the bench.
