Mayra Ramirez to Score Anytime

Ramirez was brought in by Chelsea after Sam Kerr sustained a long term injury, between Ramirez and Aggie Beever Jones Chelsea have lethal striking options to go alongside the various assortment of talent within the squad in every position.

Ramirez scored 10 goals across all competitions for Chelsea last season, but will be eager to improve on her tally in the WSL where she netted just four goals across her 17 appearances.

Ramirez competed in the Copa America Femenina over the summer and scored three goals across her six appearances in the competition.

Khadija Shaw to Score Anytime

Chelsea topped the WSL last season without losing a game, they won 10 of their 11 home matches which is a record I could see slightly faltering this season.

Chelsea have dominated the WSL for the last six years, but the league is becoming more competitive and Manchester City are one of the sides that can push Chelsea a bit more than they were last season.

Khadija Shaw topped the WSL scoring charts last season with 12 goals across just 10 starts in the division, none of these goals were penalties.

She’s the best striker in the WSL and the wider women’s game in my opinion and has all the attributes to cause Chelsea problems again here.

🔵 Dominant Blues look to retain the WSL title

Chelsea have won the WSL title for six years running, their dominance was first guided by Emma Hayes who has now moved on to the US national team and now Chelsea are under the assured leadership of Sonia Bompastor who won the WSL in her first season with the Blues, going unbeaten across the 22 games.

Chelsea’s real goal is the Women’s Champions League. This is the only trophy that the Blues have been unable to secure in their period of dominance in the women’s game, it would have been difficult to see Arsenal lifting the trophy last season after all of Chelsea’s near misses.

Chelsea still have the strongest squad in the WSL and it’s notable that they won the league unbeaten last season whilst missing one of their best players in Sam Kerr. I do think the focus may shift away from their domestic campaign at some point this season with the Champions League being the main aim of Chelsea this season.

City looking to bounce back after a chaotic campaign

Manchester City had a really turbulent season last year which resulted in them finishing fourth in the WSL and missing out on a spot in the Champions League. Long term coach Gareth Taylor was removed from his role as head coach after a series of disagreements with the squad and a run of poor results.

The most high profile of these fallouts was with Chloe Kelly who didn’t feel valued at the club and made the move to Arsenal as a result, which didn’t end too badly for her as she secured the Champions League trophy with the Gunners.

Despite the politics which surrounded City off the pitch last season, they’re still an incredibly talented side that will be eager to break back into the Champions League spots this year. City missed out on the WSL title in the 23/24 season on goal difference so they are certainly a side that can challenge Chelsea’s dominance over recent years.

📊 Chelsea Women v Manchester City Women H2H

These sides faced off five times last season with Chelsea coming out on top in four of these matches. Chelsea didn’t lose a single game at home in the WSL last season.
