With just one victory in 11 matches in 2024, Cobresal are one of the weaker Chilean clubs in this year’s Copa Libertadores group stage.

After two matches they have just one point and sit bottom of Group B, while Talleres arrive in town with four points and chasing top spot.

Key players left the Chilean outfit during the off-season, including top goalscorer Cecilio Waterman, who moved to Alianza Lima on a free transfer. His presence upfront has been sorely missed.

Not only has their squad weakened, but CONMEBOL said they couldn’t play at their home stadium due to it not being up to scratch. Instead, the “hosts” are playing their matches 650km north at Estadio Zorros del Desierto in front of no more than a few hundred spectators.

Without an intimidating atmosphere, Talleres should profit. Barcelona SC were leading comfortably 1-0 against Cobresal when they travelled to Chile, only drawing thanks to a penalty after a clumsy handball inside the box.

There’s still an altitude advantage for the hosts, which may have been factored into the opening price, but Barcelona SC had no issues, and neither should Talleres.

The visitors are unbeaten in their last 11, which includes five wins, holding River Plate to a 2-2 draw in that period.

A dominant first half could see this match wrapped up before weary legs come into play. Having beaten group favourites Sao Paulo, the Argentine club will feel comfortable winning in an empty stadium against a sub-par opponent.
