By contrast, Newcastle endured an incredibly difficult end to the campaign before the break, as they were beaten by Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby as Brian Brobbery scored in the 90th minute. Prior to that, they were demolished by Barcelona and suffered a heavy 7-2 defeat at the Nou Camp.

Newcastle have been a difficult side to predict this season, and they have struggled to string together a positive run of results. The Magpies currently sit 12th in the league standings with a record of 12 wins, six draws and 13 losses.

Adam Wharton shook off any injury concerns after leaving the England camp early, as he started in midfield alongside Daichi Kamada on Thursday night.

Brennan Johnson and Yeremy Pino will also be vying to replace Evann Guessand in the front three.

For Newcastle, Eddie Howe has switched to a 4-2-3-1 in recent matches, with Nick Woltemade in an attacking midfield role. Yoane Wissa hasn’t started any of the last 12 matches for Newcastle, so Anthony Gordon could continue up front, with Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga on the flanks.

Sandro Tonali missed out against Sunderland due to an injury, but he was fit enough to feature for Italy during the international break, so he could partner Joelinton in midfield here.
