NAC Breda v FC Eindhoven
🏟
Friday 2nd September – 7:00PM KO
FC Eindhoven are tied at the top of the league at the moment with a very clinical style. They are yet to lose a point and share the top of the table with PEC Zwolle. Eindhoven don’t win their matches as easily as Zwolle does and boast a completely different style, because where PEC dominates in every aspect of the game, Eindhoven aren’t interested in having the ball. They are happy to wait in defence and come out with a quick counter-attack.
In the final days before the transfer deadline, there was some more good news, because Charles-André Brym returned on loan from Sparta Rotterdam. The Canadian winger was one of the important players in their success last season, so it got him a transfer to the top flight. After the first rounds with very few chances, Sparta decided to loan him out to his old club and Eindhoven got a decent injection of quality with that.
NAC Breda had a decent season start as well. They lost the match away at MVV a few weeks ago, but the away victory against Roda JC last week was impressive. NAC don’t really like to have the ball that much either, so this could become an interesting match with two teams more comfortable in the quick transition. In their own stadium, NAC will be pushed into having possession and I suspect Eindhoven will love that. It is how they expect to take advantage of their counter-attacking skills and that’s why I expect Eindhoven to get a result here.

VVV Venlo v Jong FC Utrecht
🏟
Friday 2nd September – 7:00PM KO
VVV have had a good start to this season. They won the first two games, but then got a reality check against title favourite PEC Zwolle, who beat them 4-0 in Venlo. Their confidence didn’t take a hit, though, and they continued with a good away win at FC Oss. The side looks mature and in this match they probably face one of the worst teams in the league. Jong FC Utrecht claimed one point from four games and don’t seem to be very competitive at this level.
The academy side claimed that point against promotion candidate Willem II last weekend, but the circumstances for that game were very different. As it was a Monday game, Utrecht played with several fringe players from the first team like Ruben Kluivert, Taylor Booth, Albert Lottin and Arthur Zagre. It made them significantly stronger than previous weeks, but that won’t be the case for this game. FC Utrecht play their Eredivisie match at the same time and all those fringe players will likely be back with the first team.
AS VVV Venlo have not had any problems beating opponents with less quality so far, I expect them to go past a weakened Jong FC Utrecht as well.

FC Den Bosch v PEC Zwolle
🏟
Friday 2nd September – 7:00PM KO
PEC Zwolle have so far been in spectacular form this season. They haven’t had the most difficult schedule, but have easily been the strongest team this season. Their dominance has not been a complete surprise, Zwolle got relegated last season, but that was on the back of a terrible first five months, in which they barely grabbed a point. In a virtual ranking since manager Dick Schreuder took over in December, they’d even be in the top half of the league.
Nevertheless, after the relegation they lost a fair bit of their starting XI from last year, so they had to start this season with a mostly new side, but the team wasn’t out of money and that helped. With the experienced base intact and several clever signings of players from top division teams from smaller leagues, they are the number one candidate to immediately come back up again. Scoring hasn’t been a problem as they scored at least four goals in three of the four matches they played.
FC Den Bosch looked improved at the start of this season, but they have been fairly disappointing. They have been giving away so many chances in each game and only scored their own chances against ADO Den Haag. Without holding midfielder Steven van der Heijden, who is suspended, they look even more prone to conceding goals and PEC Zwolle should be able to take advantage of that, that’s why I’d go on goals in this game.
