Abdul Fatawu came off the bench for Ghana against Panama and carried a real threat, taking one shot from distance across his 30 minutes or so of action.
I was quite surprised to see him on the bench for that opener, I expect him to come into the starting lineup for Ghana here as one of their more direct threats who can help the African side make the most of the opportunities that fall their way in transition.
Fatawu plays his club football for Leicester and had a pretty positive personal campaign despite the struggles that the Foxes faced throughout the campaign, culminating in their eventual relegation to League One.
Fatawu registered 16 goal contributions across his 43 starts in the Championship, notably taking 112 shots across these games (2.71 per 90). Obviously, this is a quite a step up in quality from the opponents that Fatawu faces in the Championship, but it does tell us that he is quite happy to get shots away.
68 of his 112 shots came from outside of the box in the Championship last term (60%), further confirming that Fatawu won’t be afraid to take on a speculative effort, as he did from the bench against Panama.
Fatawu didn’t feature much for Ghana during World Cup qualifying, but did play a significant role in Ghana’s AFCKN qualifying campaign, taking six shots across his three starts (2.14 per 90).
Fatawu’s consistent shot record for club and country, paired with his willingness to take on more speculative efforts should see the winger get at least one shot away here against an England backline that looked far from secure against Croatia, especially in moments of transition.
Fatawu is as short as 1.17 with other leading bookmakers to have a shot in this clash, 1.72 is a really nice price..
