⚔️ Gameweek 19 Review – 61 Points (66 Average)
A tough week at the office. Defence was a let down again in a week full of optimism, but the shining light was our transfer in of Milenkovic (6pts), it always feels good when that happens. Not much else to say for my backline with 0 clean sheets.
Palmer and Sarr both with 2 points each was a shock, but guess who saved us again… Yes, you’ve guessed it, King Mo. Another sterling performance with 16 points, doubled to 32. Not the best performance from my midfielders but at least I captained Salah and not Palmer like some managers, unfortunately they had the surprise of a rare blank from him.
Watkins (12pts) was another transfer in that paid off, but Jackson being benched by Maresca and Cunha (both 1 pts) going off injured left my team slightly lacklustre this week. Mbeumo on the bench with 7 but I never had any intention of playing him so I can’t complain. It’s a New Year though so onward and upward.
📋 Gameweek 19 Transfers Recap
Each week so you know @FplVeteran is doing the demanding work for you, we revisit key decisions from last weeks review. This GW we revisit my Transfers’ In. Salah did what is now natural to him and Isak smashed it, he could and should have had even more. Sarr was the only one to blank but with a great run of fixtures upcoming, watch this space.
Captain | Points |
Isak | 7 |
Salah | 16 |
Sarr | 2 |
Total | 25 |
✅ The Best 3 Transfers IN for Gameweek 20
🏴 Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa (£8.8m, 15%)
Promoted from last GW’s differentials list… I have a habit of predicting this. It seems to happen that often when I recommend a differential player, they perform and are included on the Transfer In section… not a terrible thing.
Ollie Watkins scored, assisted, and took all 3 bonus points v Brighton to bring him back into the spotlight; especially now that Duran is suspended for the next 3 games. It was Watkins starting spot before, and you can tell he really wants it back! Like we said we often choose players that are due an uptick in form and after a run of 4 blanks, Ollie was due a return.
Goal leaking Leicester are up next and then its Everton, West Ham, Wolves, Ipswich and even Chelsea with the way they are playing defensively. All these fixtures point to one thing for me, goals. With Haaland still not doing the business it’s between Watkins and Jesus for that current No.2 forward spot.
🇳🇿 Chris Wood – Nottingham Forest (£6.7m, 27%)
I know, I know… Yet another Forest player, but give them their due. I was losing faith in the veteran Kiwi striker and thought he was finished this season, but he proved me dead wrong this GW.
Currently joint fifth most inform forward, keep in mind that’s off the back of three straight blanks. Wood this season has been devastating with 2 double digit hauls and plenty of 9 and 8 points with an overall bonus points of 23 so far this season. Many managers have noticed this, over 510k to be exact and have already transferred him in.
I hate repeating it, but Wolves and Southampton up next only result in one thing for the big man..goals and huge haul opportunities. I’m that sold I might even take a -4 to include him this week.
🇨🇩 Yoane Wissa – Brentford (£6.2m, 9.2%)
W, W, W, my third forward. A player that has been very quiet for the last 4 GWs, but who I rate not only on the pitch but also in FPL. Brentford’s form the last 4 games has been concerning and though these were against tough opposition like Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Chelsea, it’s the lack of goals that are the most troubling.
In here lies the reason why Wissa hasn’t been talked about much. Up next Brentford play Southampton, the perfect game to find that scoring magic. If you have been reading for while you know we always attack the weakest teams and this season I will always have a player against Southampton, they are just that bad.
I already own Mbeumo but with Wissa bagging a goal and 2 bps in the reverse fixture of this game I’m considering a double up – are you? I know their names all start with W, but all I see is the word Win in these selections.
❌ The Best 3 Transfers OUT for Gameweek 20
🇧🇷 Matheus Cunha – Wolves (£7.1m, 21%)
The ban finally happened, but it was not as severe as most were expecting. A 2-game ban and only one of which he will actually miss in the Premier League seems too lenient, considering a red card received often is a minimum 3 game ban.
The fact he is currently injured and would of likely missed the games he is banned for, also adds insult to injury. All we can do is play the game according to what decision has been made and react accordingly.
Cunha takes up a valuable forward spot and with the hardest run of any team in the next 5 matches, Forest, Newcastle, Arsenal, and Chelsea look a daunting prospect. Yes, he can score goals against anyone, but I’m hedging my bets and removing for greater opportunities, maybe you should do the same?
🏴 Jarrod Bowen – West Ham (£7.5m, 6%)
This is short, (unlucky) and sweet. Bowen has fractured a bone in his left foot and will be out for an unknown amount of time. This comes at a vital time in the Hammers season when Jarrod was coming into a purple patch of form and is their main attacking outlet, a solution to their bad form.
Sometimes we know the extent of any injury and get a rough idea of time out but currently he don’t have any form of update for him. It’s easy, remove asap as his value will drop at least £0.1m before the next deadline and there are plenty of alternatives… A lot of, if not most, midfielders are even better selections in truth.
🇸🇳 Nicolas Jackson – Chelsea (£8.2m, 26%)
What was I thinking. I ignored the urge to bring him in earlier in the season when he was scoring highly, so what made me include him now? Opportunity. It’s often a double-edged sword attacking teams, but with the size of Chelsea’s squad and the majority of them at risk of a benching at some point (even the goalkeeper) it wasn’t an ideal pick.
He did score 9 points, but that was way back in GW16 and has blanked ever since. Being benched this GW went poorly for Chelsea as they were beaten by Ipswich but it’s the reduced minutes that concern me more. I can’t and won’t own a player who I don’t trust to play 90 mins especially when they cost over £8millon. All the players in the Transfer out are short and sharp this GW and Jackson is no exception… don’t wait, get rid as soon as possible.
Top Tip – Keep an eye on the teams that are under performing and consider bringing in one or a few of their assets. It’s easy to get caught in the trap of ‘they always concede’ so I won’t bring in one of their defenders. Most teams, especially the top ones, will recover from a bad run of form, with goals, clean sheets, and FPL points. It seems counter-intuitive to look at teams during this period but is heavily rewarded..if you can call it at the right time.
🦸 Gameweek 20 Captaincy Selections
🇪🇬 Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (£13.6m, 69.4%)
Only 19 games played and already over 200 FPL points… It’s quite remarkable really. Only a few GW’s ago I was telling you if Salah scored only a handful of points each remaining GW he would break his previous points record. Well on this current form he will break it, and it will be way before the end of the season… In truth, the way Man Utd are currently playing it could be this weekend; especially if Liverpool decide to turn it on.
At Old Trafford, Salah scored and assisted 2 goals resulting in a 17 pointer and his record V the Red Devils is that good that, there isn’t many games in which he doesn’t register points to be honest. Don’t over think it and captain him, remember this time last year Liverpool beat Man Utd 7-0… Could history repeat itself?
Alternative Captain Options
I would not risk it but if your feeling spicy these players might tickle your tastebuds. Watkins v Leicester, Wissa/Mbeumo v Southampton, Wood v Wolves or Jesus v Brighton. All fairly risky instead of King Mo though so choose wisely.
Top three for me this GW: Salah – Watkins – Wissa
👁️ FPL Veteran’s Vision and Verdict
3 free transfer’s made last week so I will sit tight for this GW at least.
My defenders’ form has been worrying but with so many goals scored currently in the Premier League, there is not much point in changing unless I’m 100% sure of a clean sheet.
Midfield is set as usual, but up top, Jackson will make way for Isak. I will make this transfer earlier than usual in the week as currently I have the exact amount of funds required to make the move.
