⚔️ Gameweek 9 Review – 51 Points (54 Average)
A tough week to have an average score. Defence and goalkeeper remain the weakness of my side with a blank for my double Liverpool defence, Raya (0 pts) conceding and picking up a booking and Keane (2pts) not able to reproduce the heroics of the last 2 GWs.
Onto the strength of my side, midfield. Mbeumo (15pts) is fast becoming a must own player, but the remainder were a let-down. 2 blanks and the 2nd biggest let down of the GW, Phil Foden (3 pts) at home V Southampton, to only take a clean sheet point is not what I had planned! Up top, Evanilson (8 pts) came on late and scored a much-needed goal but the biggest let down of the whole weekend was Haaland. To only pick up one goal against the worst team possibly ever in the Premier League wouldn’t be a good return for £6m let alone £15.4m. This is the biggest sign yet, that you can play without him, and still score well.
📋 Gameweek 9 Transfer Recap
Each week so you know @FplVeteran is doing the demanding work for you, we revisit key decisions from last week’s review. This GW we revisit my transfers In. We are back to our best and it could have been even better. Garnacho hit the crossbar, and I expected more from Haaland as did most.
Out | Points |
Haaland | 6 |
Gvardiol | 9 |
Garnacho | 2 |

✅ The Best 3 Transfers IN for Gameweek 10
🇨🇩 Yoane Wissa – Brentford (£5.9m, 3.8%)
A differential pick last week that has now been promoted to a full pick. The striker raced back from injury in record time to remind us of what he was doing at the start of the season, scoring goals, assists, and points! If you put into perspective that Wissa outscored Haaland in GW9 by 4 points but is almost £10m less, you start to realise it’s worth thinking about it. But money aside Wissa is a great pick in his own right, only blanking once all season which was against Liverpool at Anfield (when playing 90 mins).
Bournemouth, Everton, and Leicester in the next four makes for good reading and I expect him to continue his great form, who knows, over this period he might beat Haaland again and maybe even more than once!
🇧🇷 Matheus Cunha – Wolves (£6.5m, 3.3%)
A penalty taker is always an excellent choice in FPL, especially a penalty taker in good form and the best run of fixtures of any team in the next 9. As we said, with a pleasing amount of upcoming football on the horizon, you want a few assets in your side that you can leave to accumulate points for the medium to long term, saving the vital free transfers for a mini wildcard when there are huge fixture swings or double GWs.
Southampton, Everton, Ipswich, Leicester, Crystal Palace the list goes on and on and hopefully so do the points. Wolves have been under pressure due to what seems like poor results, but factor in they have already played what could very well be the top 6 in truth I only see one thing here, opportunity. Wolves have only failed to score against a great Arsenal defence on the opening game of the season, so this pick isn’t as risky as once thought and I’ve seen enough, he’s already in my squad.
🏴 Dominic Calvert-Lewin – Everton (£6.0m, 5.5%)
I was hesitant at first on this choice but I’m coming round to it. I controlled the urge way back in GW3 after his 12 points to transfer him in and I was right to resist. Since then, he has failed to score in 5 games, though not through the want of trying. He has been occupying the opposition defence while Toffee’s midfielders and even defenders utilise the space and time to significant effect, scoring much-needed goals and points. Yes, I am applying the eye test, but the data also suggests this drought will end very soon.
In his last away game (V Ipswich) DCL had 5 shots (3 on target) and an xG of 1.31, missing 2 big chances in the process. Next up is the perfect fixture, Southampton. Though many believe they have turned a corner and improved against Man City (where they only lost 1-0) I still believe they don’t possess anywhere near the quality to remain in the league, and I only see a heavy defeat on the cards. I never thought I would say it this season, but I see DCL scoring highly this GW.
❌ The Best 3 Transfers OUT for Gameweek 10
🇫🇷 Alphonse Areola – West Ham (£4.4m, 6.5%)
This is why we must be so careful with our key goalkeeping picks. From experience, a super cheap goalkeeper is polarised into either a fantastic pick or a dreadful one and Areola falls into the latter. West Ham have had their worst start ever to a league campaign, conceding 16 goals in 9 games with 6 goals just in the last 3 games.
Admittedly, the defence have not been up to task so far, but Areola has also been criticised for his poor goalkeeping performances with several errors leading to goals exacerbating West Ham’s poor league position of 16th(before playing Man Utd). Clearly Lopetegui also noticed these points as he was dropped for GW9, and I don’t foresee him making a return anytime soon. You don’t want a player who doesn’t play, take him out immediately.
🏴 Phil Foden – Man City (£4.7m, 12%)
Ohhhh Phil, not again. From years of owning Man City assets, there are few players under Pep Guardiola that escape his roulette of starts, benching or positional changes and Foden seems to be affected the worst. Even with KDB out injured, he has not become that consistent playmaker that continues the required continuity Man City need if they are ultimately going to become champions again.
I offset this, however, because I thought he was worth the risk in the easier fixture against the weaker teams, even if coming off the bench. I am not an overly reactive manager; any player can blank at any time however I just don’t want the insecurity of Foden not always starting which will only increase in the coming weeks as KDB gets back to full fitness. I’ve already removed him, so think carefully if you do intend on keeping him.
🏴 Brennan Johnson – Tottenham (£6.7m, 10.5%)
I am happy for Johnson, I really am. After a tough period at Tottenham, he responded to the doubters with an electric run of form that seen him score 7 goals in 7 games for club and country. At a cut price of £6.7m that is huge value that made many FPL managers sit up, take notice and act by transferring him in. But what we do know from past seasons is that Johnson is a confidence and form player
. Last season he had his best goal-scoring season to date with 5 goals and is currently already sat on 3 this season. Though he is a good, cheap route into a direct, attacking Spurs side he will score points and goals in clumps and currently he’s outside of one. By all means, hold onto him and see how he fairs but unless you are going hold onto him for the entire season, replace for a similar asset with better fixtures and get him back when form returns. Currently there are just too many good midfield options to hold onto a passenger.
Top Tip – With a high amount of league and European football over the next four weeks, think carefully about the next set of transfers you make. Ensure you have a good blend of premium and cheap assets and a maximum of two differentials to gain rank rise. Look at the Fixture Difficulty Rating chart and attack key (Green) fixtures. All going well you can build up your free transfers (FT) and utilise them to devastating effect over the festive period.
🦸 Gameweek 10 Captaincy Selections
🇪🇬 Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (£12.6m, 40%)
King Mo is back on top! A full 9 points ahead of Haaland who has even slipped to third in the overall score rankings. From nine games this season, Salah has an incredible six double-digit returns and he’s not even hit top gear yet! Next up is an attacking but vulnerable Brighton, which history tells us could be rewarding for the Egyptian midfielder.
3 goals and 2 assists in his last 5 matches against Brighton points to him being heavily involved in most, if not all attacking returns Liverpool have in GW10. Sure, Brighton are now an entertaining, vibrant, attacking team to watch, but in a game where Liverpool will catch them on the counterattack often, I am extremely bullish Salah could hit his biggest score of the season so far, he is locked in as my captain
Alternative Captain Options
GW10 is an opportunity for alternative captaincy options, and there are a plethora of places to look. The best alternative pick is either Cunha or Strand-Larsen at home to Crystal Palace where I think goals will fly in but also Cole Palmer away at Old Trafford could be rewarding. Man United are under extreme pressure and we all know what Palmer is capable. If you still own Haaland, Bournemouth away could be a good return, though I would be careful as the Cherries are a decent team to break down at Home.
👁️ FPL Veteran’s Vision and Verdict
Making moves already! You can see I have gone early for once and been decisive in preparation for GW10. With many more strikers firing now, the huge weight of Haaland and his price tag has been moved on. He wont grace my team again this season and is replaced with Cunha with an impressive set of fixtures upcoming for Wolves. A slight restructure has taken place in midfield with all the big hitters coming in, and for the long term.
This is more or less how the team will look for the next 2-3 weeks, and I am anticipating a big score and rank rise. The bench is fine for now, Stewart will be moved on shortly, but I am content with two ‘playing’ players. Over this busy period, I wouldn’t advise any less than 2 players that play on your bench, you will need it.
