France Women v England Women

🗓️

Kick Off: Saturday 5th July at 20:00

🏆

Competition: Women's European Championship

The Lionesses get their EUROs campaign underway with a heavyweight clash against France, these two sides are amongst the favourites to win the entire competition and are joined in Group D by Netherlands and Wales making it quite a competitive group.

Sarina Wiegman led the Lionesses to the trophy in this competition back in 2022 and will be optimistic of a deep run this time around as well. The squad is just as strong as it was in the 2022 triumph, but Spain are still the favourites to lift the trophy this summer.

These sides were actually in the same qualification group for the European Championships and faced off twice last summer. France came out on top in the first meeting but England claimed a 2-1 victory in the second game with Russo scoring the winner on that occasion.

Russo comes into this tournament on the back of a really successful season for Arsenal in which she netted 20 goals across her 41 appearances for the Gunners. Arsenal lifted the Champions League during the 24/25 campaign, Russo contributed heavily to this success with eight goals across her 15 games in the most elite club competition.

Russo’s record at international level is also pretty impressive, she’s netted 23 goals across her 51 caps for England since 2020 which shows that she can provide as regularly on the international stage as she does for her club side.

Super Sub could also be a factor here, if Russo is taken off then she is likely to be replaced by Agnes Beever Jones who netted 13 goals for Chelsea during the 24/25 campaign and has scored five goals across her eight England caps already.

When assessing the potential threats for France here, Diani stands out as a player that can cause England problems, just as she did during the qualifying games. Diani scored against England in France’s 2-1 loss to the Lionesses in the second game of qualifying and was also an active threat in the first game. Even at 30, Diani continues to be a really effective player as displayed by her 26 goal contributions across her 29 appearances for OL Lyonnes last season (16 goals, 10 assists). Diani is also incredibly consistent, she’s scored 14+ goals in each of the last seven seasons.

💻 France Women v England Women Form and Tactics

Sarina Wiegman’s side have had to endure a chaotic build up to this tournament with players pulling out of the squad due to injury and some question marks over the mentality of this side when going up against the more elite sides in the women’s game, Spain being the standout side who beat England 2-1 in a Nations League game just a few weeks before this tournament.

England did have a very successful warm up game in beating Jamaica 7-0 on the 29th June which will have lifted spirits in the camp but it must be noted that this is well below the quality of opponent that England will face in this tournament. They’ll have to be switched on early seeing as their group could become quite complicated with the likes of France and the Netherlands offering a threat and a clash against Wales which can be tricky given the added rivalry between the nations.

France are a very complete side and come into this tournament having won each of their last eight matches. This run includes finishing top of their Nations League group, winning all six of the matches and only conceding two goals. They also won their warm up game for this tournament against Brazil, so they are used to going toe to toe with another heavyweight in the women’s game. France may just have the advantage here given the issues that England have had in the build up to this tournament.
