NEW LONDON has been well found at the top of the betting on handicap debut over this 1m2f trip. There is good reason for this horse’s position in the market with a handicap mark of 99 looking somewhat lenient. The son of Dubawi was given single-figure quotes for the Epsom Derby after an impressive novice success on the Rowley Mile track at Newmarket on second outing, running ahead of dominant Royal Ascot handicap scorer Missed Cut in the process. The selection was disappointing in the G3 Chester Vase when not seemingly not handling the tight track on soft ground but is firmly expected to appreciate this drop in class on a more conventional circuit.

A chance is taken on TAGLINE at a big price. She could improve on a third over course and distance at Listed level last time. The daughter of Havana Grey was one of the last off the bridle that day and rallied well to the finish once coming under pressure. Her proximity to the reopposing Lezoo and Malrescia suggests she is overpriced at double-figure odds with a progressive and unexposed profile.

TRAWLERMAN is given a chance to atone for a below par effort in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot. He was never involved after a slow start and was allowed to coast home under a tender ride. He could have more to offer on just a third handicap run from a mark of 98. Another who has scope for improvement is SUMMER’S KNIGHT, who caught the eye with a running-on fifth in the valuable Northumberland Plate Handicap on the Tapeta surface at Newcastle, behind Trueshan. Interestingly, he fared the best from those who sat off the pace and could have more to offer in staying handicaps.

This ultra-competitive handicap has numerous chances, but none catch the eye more than SAMBURU for the John & Thady Gosden stable. The three-year-old gets a handy 8lb weight allowance from his older rivals and appears well handicapped given his good effort into sixth behind Noble Truth (who was a winning selection for this column at Royal Ascot) in the G3 Jersey Stakes. The Kingman colt was unbeaten in three starts prior to that and was fitted with first-time cheekpieces. His chances are enhanced returning to handicap company, with an unexposed profile, and interestingly he has a Group Two entry in August. One at a bigger price who appeals for an each-way option is RHOSCOLYN, who finished strongly in the Buckingham Palace Handicap Stakes despite being inconvenienced from a troubled passage when behind a wall of horses at the 3f marker. He’s likely to run on from the back, after not being raised in the weights after that good effort.

WILD THUNDER improved significantly in a first-time visor when a narrow third at Beverley over 1m2f prior to an easy success at Nottingham under the excellent Serena Brotherton. The Night Of Thunder gelding looks to have got his act together for this stable and a 6lb rise in the weights is unlikely to stop him from claiming back-to-back wins at this low level. The step up a furlong in distance looks ideal as a half-brother to 1m6f flat scorer Mr Chua, with scope for progress beyond this 0-60 grade, as he’ll be racing in stronger company going forward.
