Luxembourg remain pointless after four Group A matches, destined for a bottom place finish.

On Thursday night, they face a Germany side in fine form, aiming for a fourth straight win to strengthen their grip on top spot, making it a daunting task for the European minnows to reverse their fortunes.

Germany (-2) Handicap

After a shock loss in round one against Slovakia, Germany have bounced back strongly with three successive victories to put them top of their group. Luxembourg’s form has been a stark contrast, and they are still yet to register a point on the board. After four matches, they have scored just the single goal, while their heaviest defeat was dealt in Germany.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men were dominant from the outset, taking the lead after just 12 minutes following a disallowed goal four minutes in. Luxembourg defender Dirk Carlson was sent off soon after for handling the ball in his own penalty area, but the Germans were well in control even before that red card.

With the extra man advantage, Germany dominated proceedings on home turf, registering 84% possession from which they carved out 31 shots. In return, the visitors managed just one shot, in what was a tough away outing.

Over 6.5 Germany Corners

It was one-way traffic for the vast majority of Germany's last clash with Luxembourg, and the Germans were able to rack up seven corners in total. Even if Luxembourg can keep eleven men on the field this game, it’s unlikely for that gamestate to be any different, especially given that Luxembourg have lost their last three matches to nil.

The October international break was a particularly damning one for them, as they suffered back-to-back defeats against Slovakia and Germany. In fairness, both of those sides sit level on points at the top of Group A, so Luxembourg were underdogs in those matches.

There is nevertheless a massive gulf in quality between these two sides, and with the Germans still fighting to secure top spot in Group A, they are expected to be front-footed in their approach, and Luxembourg will struggle to keep them at bay.

📈 Luxembourg v Germany Form & Stats

That unwanted, losing feeling has been a familiar one for Luxembourg in the group stages so far, as they have failed to score in any of their last three fixtures. The October international break was a particularly damning one for them, as they suffered back-to-back defeats against Slovakia and Germany.

On Thursday night, Slovakia host Northern Ireland in Kosice, and will be favourites along with Germany to secure victory in round five. If results go as expected, a round six clash between Germany and Slovakia at the Red Bull Arena will decide the group. The winner secures automatic World Cup qualification, while the loser will hope to secure qualification via the playoffs.

Germany were beaten by Slovakia in round one of the group stages, but they will fancy their chances of enacting revenge on home turf, especially given how strong they have looked since that result.

Die Mannschaft have won their last three matches coming into this Friday night clash, having conceded just one goal in that time. They kept two clean sheets in their October fixtures, while scoring five goals in return.
