Betting on this, if it is the legitimate prize fight it proclaims to be, should be focused on how quickly Joshua will knock out Paul and whether Paul can get up even once if he is decked. Logic screams in ear-shattering volume that this shouldn’t go past the first round; the disparity is vast. Common sense insists that Joshua simply needs to walk across the ring, throw a jab, feint the second jab, and throw a straight right hand or uppercut, and Paul will be on his back.

Paul was, after all, reticent when Tommy Fury, a part-time fighter at Light-Heavyweight, threw a punch. Regardless of the sparring Paul has done to prepare for a geriatric Mike Tyson a year ago – a fight fought in sparring gloves, or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at Cruiserweight earlier this year, the power Joshua is bringing is entirely different.

Only the permission of ‘narratives’ could conceive of Paul making it to the second round. Does Joshua posture, carry Paul for a round or two to shake off his own ring rust and test the elbow he had operated on in May? Does he treat it like a sparring session and throw lighter punches? Does Paul dare to trade, or, as a novice may, skirt around the ring trying to avoid exchanges?

Much like his fight with Francis Ngannou, I suspect the big, nasty, pitiless version of Joshua will be in play. Joshua cared not for Ngannou’s amateurish defence or any need to prolong his suffering, and Joshua wore his greater pedigree like armour. Ngannou, who had floored Tyson Fury lest we forget, was flattened unceremoniously.

A plausible longshot is Paul beating one count if he’s floored. It is a lofty ambition, but if Paul jumps to the canvas on first contact, he may rise and run, realising the stupidity of the venture. The notion of him being permitted to continue could depend on the appetite of the referee to allow Joshua to land more punches on a vulnerable novice.

A solid treble is to combine the certainty of a Joshua win by stoppage, to score 2+ knockdowns, and add a Knockdown to occur in Rounds 1-2, available.

🥊 Tale of the Tape

Generic

Jake Paul versus Anthony Joshua is a fight few boxing observers could conceive of just two months ago. Several are still struggling to believe it will happen even as the reality of fight week dawns. Regardless of the scepticism, Jake Paul will face man-mountain Anthony Joshua over 8 rounds wearing 10oz gloves on Friday night. NETFLIX will stream the event live from Miami. And it is a real fight.

Has a fight like Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua ever been made before? There are no comparable matchups to conjure. Perhaps Pete Rademacher, an Olympic Gold medallist making his professional debut versus the reigning heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson in 1957? But Rademacher had skills and was bigger than Floyd. Denver Bronco hard man, Lyle Alzado, causing a weary Muhammad Ali problems in 1976, albeit an exhibition? Neither come close to this.

Scope for the chaos of battle remains, such is the unprecedented alchemy of the pairing and the alternate dimension that always waits between the ropes and beneath the lights. Despite the noise, the cardinal rule of betting based on the evidence available still applies.

Anthony Joshua, 28-4 (25 KO), is no longer the dominant heavyweight he was a few years ago, and his limitations and fragilities have been widely exposed by Ruiz, Usyk and Dubois. Nevertheless, he is a 36-year-old former two-time unified champion and the 2012 Olympic gold medallist. He punches like a freight train and has beaten more than two dozen men who would all likely obliterate Paul too. Joshua doesn’t permit himself to get out of shape.

Jake Paul, 12-1 (7 KO), by comparison to world-level heavyweights, is hopeless. And, if any more reasoning is necessary, Joshua is 5 inches taller, it looks like more in the flesh, and at least 30 pounds heavier and has been a bigger human his entire adult life. He punches incredibly hard with both hands. Paul is barely recognisable as a heavyweight beside him and has beaten nobody active or competent. His 12-1 ledger is a smoke screen of opportunism.
