Leigh Wood to Win in Rounds 9-12 & 2+ Knockdowns in the Fight

In their first fight, the rough and rugged Warrington was steering clear on the scorecards until Wood found the devastating equaliser that had got him out of trouble time and time again, decking the Yorkshireman in the seventh before he was stopped on his feet.

That proved to be the final fight at 126lbs for both men, with each moving up to 130 and losing to Anthony Cacace since. Although Warrington has since returned to the winners' column, whilst 37-year-old Wood has not.

Still, the punch resistance, or lack of, shown from Warrington in his initial encounter, added to the fact that Wood should have more power up at super-featherweight, means that it is Wood who enters as the favourite in this must-win match-up, and, in my opinion, that status is warranted.

Whilst Warrington’s ability to take a shot should be improved by a move up in weight and a more favourable weight cut, the added power that Wood will bring means that Warrington must be perfect for 12 rounds.

His front-footed, chin-on-chest style has served him well in his professional career to date, but here, I believe it will be his undoing and that he will get caught down the stretch.

All six of Wood’s most recent knockout victories have come in the second half of contests, with five coming in the ninth or later. I expect that trend to continue here and that Wood will rally to a dramatic victory between rounds 9-12, as he finds the fight-ending shot late on.

Don’t be surprised to see Warrington have early success and bank rounds in the opening stages, but at 35 years old, he is unlikely to have the legs to avoid Wood’s superior power shots for the entirety.

On Saturday night, Leigh Wood returns to his hometown of Nottingham to rematch familiar foe Josh Warrington, seeking a first win since he stopped ‘The Leeds Warrior’ back in October 2023.

This time, the former featherweight world champions collide at super-featherweight, and there is a sense that retirement may beckon for the loser.

Here, I look at the standout selections of that Matchroom bill, as Wood and Warrington go to war in a bout that will have major ramifications on the super-featherweight scene.

Fixtures for: Saturday 21st February

Tiah Mai Ayton v Catherine Tacone Ramos

Wood v Warrington II

19:10

Tiah Mai Ayton by KO/TKO/DQ @ 1.53

In no uncertain terms, Bristol’s Tiah Mai Ayton looks to be the future of British boxing, having won by knockout in all four of her professional bouts since debuting in June off the back of an unbeaten amateur career, where she was a five-time national champion.

Despite Ramos being her toughest test yet, only one of the nine opponents that Ramos has defeated had a win to their name, ironically that one was Shannon Courtenay, whom the Brazilian upset in her lone fight on British soil.

As a result, I expect this knockout streak to continue as 19-year-old Ayton impresses again, showing a clear difference in levels and closing the show before the eight rounds are up.

Sandy Ryan v Karla Ramos Zamora

Wood v Warrington II

20:20

Sandy Ryan by Dec/Tec Dec @ 1.30

After losing her WBO welterweight world title to Mikaela Mayer and then coming up short in their rematch, Sandy Ryan bounced back to winning ways against Jade Grierson in a much-needed win back in September.

Ryan now takes on the deceptively recorded Zamora in a clash for the vacant WBC super-lightweight crown, and she should prove to be far too skilled for the predictable Mexican, who has lost just twice in her last 11 outings despite her 12-10-2 pro record.

Still, Zamora went the distance against Beatrix Ferreira and has not been stopped in over a decade, meaning this one will likely head to the judges.

Ishmael Davis v Bilal Fawaz

Wood v Warrington II

21:00

Ishmael Davis by Dec/Tec Dec @ 1.80

The rise of Bilal Fawaz has been admirable. Born in Nigeria and battling the law as much as his opponents, his October victory in a rematch with top prospect Junaid Bostan, where he claimed the English title, should inspire many fighters around the world.

However, the 37-year-old fan-favourite is no longer in with a prospect; this time, he takes on the well-schooled British super-welterweight champion, Ishmael Davis, who boasts wins over the likes of Troy Williamson and Sam Gilley.

Solid with his jab and experienced over 12 rounds, expect Davis to dictate proceedings and claim a lop-sided decision on the scorecards.
